One in a series of Chicagoland residents concerning their religious faith and practice.
Kelly Chesnik, 26, is a Financial Aid Advisor at Harrington College of Design. She lives near the North Ave and Western Ave intersection in Wicker Park, Chicago. Kelly provided some thoughtful answers to my questions about her faith.
What is your church called? What denomination? How long have you been attending?
Covenant Presbyterian Church, PCA (Presbyterian Church of America), nearly 3 years…
What are your favorite things about your church?
I started going to Covenant because it was recommended to me by a friend. Another friend and I were visiting a different church every week for several months and hadn’t found anything either of us really loved. After visiting one time, my friend Joe suggested we visit Covenant, and I think we both knew immediately that it was right. The music is really what drew me in at first – centuries-old hymns, along with some modern ones, played by guitars, a piano, strings, sung with rich harmonies. And I was amazed at how much the space – a majestic old Catholic church – added to the music. The sound was holy and worshipful.
Why did you choose that particular church, and denomination?
I didn’t really choose this denomination, and to be honest, had I not attended it and loved it before I did more research, I probably wouldn’t go there. Fundamentally, the PCA is much more conservative than my personal beliefs. For example, they don’t allow female pastors.
