Egypt is committing copious amounts of unconscionable evils that would make American history blush. They are enslaving thousands of people and making them work. Then, out of fear of their slaves fighting back, they are taking their children between the ages of 0-2 and drowning them in the Nile. They are outrageously evil. And while Pharaoh is making these decisions, the Egyptian people are sitting by and watching, perhaps even encouraging and praising their evil dictator. But perhaps the most shocking thing about this story is the fact that God waits 40 years before responding!

By now, I’m sure you’ve heard Virginia Governor Northam’s evil statement encouraging infanticide. While they are disturbing to hear, these kinds of statements are shared by many in our country. Recently, the state of New York cheered the passing of a similar bill with applause.

It wasn’t too long ago that a friend was preaching from Exodus chapter 1, and it really struck me just how patient God was with Egypt.

From time to time while evangelizing, I get approached by an angry atheist, and it is fascinating to see them grasp at straws to explain away their hate for God. One of their most common accusations is to call God a genocidal maniac. In fact, the story of the angel of God killing all the firstborn men of Egypt tops the list as far as most mentioned examples of God’s genocidal tendencies. But, is it really so?

And while Pharaoh is making these decisions, the Egyptian people are sitting by and watching, perhaps even encouraging and praising their evil dictator. Have you ever considered that?

God is extraordinarily patient. You and I would kill every Egyptian within seconds, and yet God waits forty years before even sending Moses!

And He doesn’t stop there!

He sends Moses to confront Pharaoh. And He gives him the opportunity to simply let the Israelite people—he has enslaved, tortured, and kept against their will for dozens of years—go scot free, no questions asked, without any repercussions. While He should have avenged the murder of hundreds, if not thousands, of babies, He simply sends Moses to request freedom. And yet, Pharaoh, blinded by his great wickedness, rejects the offer.
