When we pray expository prayers, we line up with what God has revealed in His word. When we pray according to the will of God, we are reminded that we come to God as servants, not masters.
Lord, teach us to pray.
This has been the disposition of Jesus’ disciples from the very beginning. We often do not know how to pray as we ought. Maybe you have felt that way. Maybe you see your weakness in prayer. There’s good news: Jesus taught his disciples how to pray, and through the Scripture we have a plethora of examples of faithful prayers. I want to commend to you expository praying.
What Is Expository Praying?
Expository praying is taking God’s word back to Him in order to faithfully praise, petition, and bring supplication. If expository preaching is, “preaching that takes for the point of a sermon the point of a particular passage of Scripture,” then expository praying is making the point of our prayers the point of the Scriptures. Now, don’t use this as an excuse to turn your prayers into little sermons. This is praying, not preaching. But I’m convinced that our best praying happens when we laser focus our prayers on the correct understanding of the Scriptures. I want to give you three reasons why we should pray this way.
