The Study Group was created by last summer’s 30th General Assembly “to meet through June 2012 to study potential changes of presbytery boundaries and/or the creation of new presbyteries.”
The Study Group on Presbytery Boundaries (SGB) held its first meeting in Atlanta on November 5-6, 2010.
The goals of this initial meeting were to establish rapport, make an initial assessment of its assignment, to develop an overall plan of approaching that assignment and to act upon any items requiring immediate attention.
A core commitment adopted by the SGB is to communicate actively with those potentially affected by boundary changes that are already under discussion within presbyteries and those who would be affected by any changes proposed by the SGB.
As requested by the Committee on Administration (COA), the SGB reviewed the proposed division of the Mid-America Presbytery into two presbyteries. This matter was referred to the COA with commission powers by the 30th General Assembly. The SGB has endorsed that proposal to the COA, which is scheduled to meet later this month to act on the proposal.
Separate from that endorsement the SGB noted its concern with the long-term viability of the northern presbytery that would result from that division and will immediately begin exploring possibilities to ensure its long-term viability as soon as achievable.
