Erskine alumni group seeks answers to ARP Synod’s recent actions

Written by Felicia Kitzmiller | Friday, March 12, 2010

“Dr. Ruble has more experience on SACS boards than anyone else in the Southeast. When he says we’re not going to lose our accreditation, we’re not going to lose our accreditation.”

A rallying cry in support of Erskine College was raised at the Greenwood chapter alumni meeting Thursday evening at the First Greenwood Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church.

About 40 alumni asked various questions about the General Synod’s decision March 3 to unseat 14 board members and replace them with an interim board.

The new board was charged with revising the school’s bylaws to accommodate several recommendations made by a commission organized in June to investigate if the school was in compliance with directives of the synod.

The revision, however, has been halted by a temporary restraining order granted as part of a lawsuit by Erskine College against the General Synod.

Why the investigation was conducted, how it was conducted and how it would affect the future of the school were among the inquiries. Alumni affairs director Buddy Ferguson, vice president for enrollment, financial aid and public relations Woody O’Cain, and marketing director Rick Hendricks attempted to answer the questions and occasionally received help from other faculty, alumni and students.
