During the last two decades, Martin has helped steer scores of men and women in the ministry direction in which God was leading them.
Dr. Joseph Martin recently was named Belhaven University’s 45th faculty member to be inducted into the Belhaven Legacy of Learning. This is a prestigious group consisting of men and women who have taught at Belhaven for 20 or more years.
The announcement was made by Dr. Roger Parrott at Belhaven’s August 12 Service of Dedication held in the Center for the Arts.
Martin, the chair of Belhaven’s Biblical studies department, came to Belhaven in 1989 as a missionary-in-residence, which was, at the time, intended to be a one-year position. However, the opportunity to remain at Belhaven long-term opened up and Dr. Martin has been in Jackson ever since.
Prior to coming to Belhaven, Martin and his wife, Helen, were missionaries in Brazil for 24 years. Martin’s passion for mission work, and for Brazil in particular, is something he endeavors to pass on to his students in all of his classes.
“What a blessing it is to work with the students, staff, faculty, and administration at Belhaven,” Dr. Martin said. “It is encouraging to see God faithfully and powerfully at work in our midst. It is satisfying to see God transform lives.”
During the past several years, Helen has also served Belhaven in various capacities, teaching, among other things, New Testament Survey.
During the last two decades, Martin has helped steer scores of men and women in the ministry direction in which God was leading them. “It is rewarding to hear of graduates who are serving the Lord in many different places and in many ways,” he said. “May God be praised for all these good things, and may we keep looking to him in faith for all that lies ahead.
Martin, who is an ordained PC (USA) minister currently serves Union Church Presbyterian Church (PCA) in Union Church, Mississippi.
Martin will officially be received into Belhaven’s Legacy of Learning this year during Homecoming week, which is scheduled for October 1 and 2.
