If you stand before God in your sins, you will stand condemned, and you will suffer the consequences of living in rebellion to the living God.But God in His mercy has provided a way of escape. He has given the way to be saved from your sins. And it is not through peace deals, or mighty acts of bravery, or lifelong church attendance. He has sent His own Son in the likeness of human flesh. Jesus Christ, God in the flesh, came to live the perfect life that you could not.
“I don’t think there’s anything going to get me to heaven, okay? I think I’m maybe not heaven-bound. I may be in heaven right now flying Air Force One. I’m not sure I’m going to be able to make heaven.“
Donald Trump
This is what I long to hear people say. I want people to hear about the great chasm that separates them from God and think, “There’s no way I can cross that.” Donald Trump is realizing, on the cusp of achieving one of the greatest accomplishments of his presidency, that he is not good enough to go to heaven. Those who know and love the gospel have lamented hearing Trump’s desire to make worldwide peace deals and end wars in order to make it to heaven. I hope Trump repents and believes the gospel. I hope he turns from his sin and trusts in Jesus. I don’t have any suspicion that Donald Trump will read this blog (President Trump, if you’re reading, drop me a comment). But you are reading. Give me just a second more of your time.
The Problem
You’re probably not in any position to do as much good as the President of the United States of America. You’re not likely to end wars, or bring peace, or have a global impact for good. And yet, even if you could, this would not be enough to pay the price for your sins. You have racked up a sin debt that you can never repay. You have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, and all your righteous deeds before God are filthy rags (Isa 64:6).
