Do Saints have a prayer of winning? Hattiesburg pastors weigh in

Written by Ben Piper | Tuesday, February 2, 2010

Fans of the New Orleans Saints have had to stare up at the heavens asking for 43 years, ‘Why?’ in regards to gut-wrenching losses and seemingly implausible outcomes against the beloved Saints. …If divine forces are at work here, is it OK to pray for the Saints to win the Super Bowl? The Rev. Sean Lucas, pastor of First Presbyterian……

The Rev. Sean Lucas, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, said fans can pray for the win but not to expect much in return. He said praying for human desires for God’s greater will is the doctrine of the Presbyterian church.

“While praying for a favorite sports team to win would be offering up our desires unto God, it would ultimately represent a truncated desire, a desire for something less than God’s glory and for God himself,” he said.

“It is not a prayer that we should expect God to answer and one that we shouldn’t offer up to God.”

Local pastors all agreed that attendance Sunday morning would be about average since the Super Bowl is later in the evening.

Lucas said Sunday evening services are still planned and encouraged congregants to record the game.
