What kinds of difficulties do graduates run into shortly after shedding their cap and gown?..
According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, in 2007, 51 percent of graduates who applied for jobs secured one by the time they graduated. Then in 2008, only 26 percent of the graduating class had obtained a job by their graduation. Now, just under one fifth of 2009’s graduates who applied for a job actually have one, according to the NACE’s 2009 Student Survey.
According to the Center for Calling and Career’s Covenant senior exit survey for 2010, 68 percent of graduates entered the job market in a field related to their major.
Numbers are down for finding jobs, as well as for overall starting salary — which dropped a little over one percent last year. A starting salary for degree graduates stands at $48,661…
Anthony Tucker, the Director of the Center for Calling and Career, said it’s impossible to be adequately prepared for the outside world, adding that students can only imagine what it’s like to work at a full-time position for a company.
The three to four years immediately following college are telling years of maturity,” said Tucker. “For students pursuing full-time jobs, be prepared to steward more money and time than you expected.”
