Corey Mullins, former women’s assistant coach at Bryan College and head men’s coach at both Boyce College (Louisville, KY) and Kentucky Christian University (Grayson, KY), has been hired to lead Covenant’s women’s basketball team beginning in the 2010-2011 season. As the team’s third head coach in as many years, Mullins will look to improve on last year’s 10-15 record and first round exit of the NCCAA region tournament.

In 2003, after graduating with a degree in business education from Middle Tennessee State University, Mullins worked with the Bryan women’s team as Matt Bollant’s assistant. There, he saw the Lady Lions make four consecutive NAIA national tournaments (2003-2007) and earn a trip to the sweet sixteen in 2006. Bryan also won the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) tournament in 2005 and the AAC regular season in 2006 and 2007.

At the end of the 2006-2007 season, Bollant was offered a Division I head coaching job at the University of Wisconsin- Green Bay, and Mullins earned the head men’s position at Boyce College in Louisville. In only the second season in the program’s history, Mullins led the team to a 6-21 season before leaving to join Kentucky Christian’s staff for the 2008-2009 season.

During his two seasons at Kentucky Christian, Mullins helmed the Knights to a 36-29 overall record and an NCCAA Mid-East region tournament championship in 2009. The team was also ranked in the NCCAA top 10 throughout both seasons.

Says the new head coach: “I want to thank President Nielson, the Board of Trustees, and Tami Smialek for the opportunity to be a part of the Women’s Basketball program here at Covenant College. My wife and I are so excited to bring our family down to Lookout Mountain and the Chattanooga area. I have always had a tremendous respect for the people that I have had contact with over my seven years as a college coach, and I firmly believe that Covenant has the resources in place to continue to build a program that brings honor to Christ, the Covenant community, and the young ladies who represent the Lady Scots basketball family.”

Mullins is currently working on a Master of Sports Science/ Management through the US Sports Academy. He and Carrie, his wife of 3 years, have two sons: Grady (2) and Tate (6 months).
