Conference Speaker Lays Out Battle Plan for Spiritual Warfare

Written by Jason P. Reagan, The Layman | Friday, November 18, 2011

Increasingly people are becoming aware that Christians are caught up in spiritual warfare and that learning the teachings of Scripture is the first step in engaging the battle.

Believers and unbelievers face a constant barrage of lies and demonic attacks from Satan on a daily basis, according to a veteran speaker at the 18th annual National Apologetics Conference — a barrage that can be stopped with God’s help and intervention.
Speaking to packed room on Oct. 28, Dr. Wayne Detzler proclaimed that the time had come for churches to realize that such battles are constant and can’t be explained away.

“Spiritual warfare is not a fad – It’s a fact of life,” he said.

Detzler, the academic dean of Southern Evangelical Seminary, laid out a plan of attack based on Biblical texts as he shared several accounts of spiritual warfare he had observed over his 20 years of teaching ministry in Europe and over his entire lifetime as a believer.

“Spiritual warfare must be fought in the Spirit,” Detzler said. “We face opponents in the spirit world. This is spiritual warfare. It is not intellectual or emotional warfare. Neither is it physical warfare. It must be fought in the spiritual plain. To engage Satan on another plain than the spiritual is to face defeat,” he added.

Increasingly, Detzler said, people are becoming aware that Christians are caught up in spiritual warfare and that learning the teachings of Scripture is the first step in engaging the battle.

Using multiple Bible verses, Detzler presented what he called a “spectrum of spiritual warfare in the life of the believer” and also talked about the topic of demon possession in unbelievers, adding that, while such people could be possessed by Satan’s demons, believers could also be oppressed by the devil.

Detzler noted that the three major objects of Satan’s attack are the unbeliever, the individual believer and the local church. Often, he said, churches don’t realize they are in the midst of the battle.

“There are certain churches which deny the very existence of the spirit world,” he said, adding, “They are sure that demons do not exist, and angels are safely locked up in the antiquity of Bible times.”
