The hot news that joiners are, well, joiners, comes from the Pew Research Center’s Internet and American Life Project, which release its report on “the civic and community engagement of religiously active Americans” today.
Christmas week is not only about last-minute shopping, it’s last-minute dropping as think tanks jam out any lingering reports that might connect to the godly.
Heaven knows, as you dash for your train home or stew in the airport boarding area that you’d like to know the latest: The 40% of Americans who say they are active in a church, religious or spiritual organizations are more likely to be active in all kinds of civic and social groups as well.

These RAs spend more than twice as much time participating in group activities than those who are uninvolved with organized religious or spiritual groups.
We don’t know much, I guess, about those who are unorganized about the ineffable so rather than call them non-religious — which Pew does — I will call them Not Active, the NAs.
A few examples:
- – 24% of Americans say they are active in sports or recreation leagues for themselves or their children (25% for the RAs and 17% for NAs)
