He joined the faculty of Covenant College in 1964, when Covenant relocated from St. Louis, Missouri, to Lookout Mountain, Georgia. He continued to teach biblical studies and other subjects at the College until his retirement in 1993. He coached teams in basketball, cross country, and soccer during part of his tenure. He was known as a true mentor to students, and is remembered in particular for bringing the conceptualizations of the “Christ & Culture” course to Covenant.

Charles W. Anderson (1925-2017), beloved professor emeritus of biblical studies at Covenant College, died on December 5, 2017.

Prof. Anderson was a graduate of Wheaton College, Faith Seminary, and the Graduate School of Theology at the University of the South. He served with the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, and before serving at Covenant College, he pastored churches in Pennsylvania.

“It’s difficult in a few sentences to express Chuck Anderson’s impact on Covenant College,” said Dr. Steve Kaufmann, professor of education and dean of education & social sciences. “For the thousands of students privileged to sit in his classes, Chuck was the one who taught us (I was one of those students) that Christ not only loves us, but he also loves his creation, and he loves the artful development of creation in culture. Chuck was well known for his teaching of the ‘now but not yet’ reality of life between the two comings of Christ, and he made us excited to look for and to live now in the light of the return of Christ. Chuck taught us, both by his life and his teaching, what the preeminence of Christ in all things means.”

In the fall of 2017, Covenant College’s Board of Trustees unanimously passed a resolution naming the auditorium in the Kirk in honor of Chuck Anderson. A dedication ceremony for the Charles W. Anderson Auditorium was held at the opening of the fall 2017 board meeting. The Board recognized Professor Anderson for his extraordinary and sacrificial contributions to the Covenant College community, his leadership among the faculty and the institution, and his teaching and friendship to students.

Prof. Anderson was predeceased by his wife, Floss Anderson. He is survived by two children, six grandchildren, and two great-children.

The family will hold visitation on Friday, December 8, 2017, from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at Wann Funeral Home, 4000 Tennessee Avenue, Chattanooga, Tennessee 37409.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 9, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel at Covenant College, 14049 Scenic Highway, Lookout Mountain, Georgia 30750. A reception to greet family members will precede the funeral at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel lobby. A private interment ceremony at Forest Hills Cemetery will follow.
