Christian University students grieve classmate’s shooting death

Written by Christian Examiner | Wednesday, October 6, 2010

“Violence is unacceptable wherever it happens,” Perkins said, adding, “There are lots of hugs and lots of tears. The university is in pain.”

Faculty and students at a private Christian university in Elizabeth City, N.C. are reeling after one student shot and killed another after a Sunday afternoon argument escalated.

The Oct. 3 shooting at Mid-Atlantic Christian University prompted the cancellation of classes as chaplains and counselors worked with devastated classmates of sophomore Jonathan Schipper. A chapel service was held Monday morning.

“It appears to be a personal matter between two students,” a statement released by the university said. “An investigation is in process and the university is cooperating with the police in the investigation.”

Local police said the shooting happened inside a Pearl Presley Hall dorm room. When they arrived, they found a male student dead of a gunshot wound. Schipper was pronounced dead at the scene.

According the university’s statement, Schipper was a resident of Havelock N.C. and was enrolled in the campus’ Youth and Family Studies program. He was described as a “quiet individual who was well liked by his fellow students and had a passion for serving the Kingdom.”

About 180 students attend the university, which was founded in 1948 and was previously known as Roanoke Bible College.
