Christian Doctor Fired For Refusing To Use Preferred Gender Pronouns Loses Legal Battle

UK doctor David Mackereth says he was terminated for his refusal to use transgender patients’ preferred pronouns, a decision that has now been upheld by a tribunal.

Written by John Wesley Reid | Friday, October 4, 2019

Tribunal: “Belief in Genesis 1:27, lack of belief in transgenderism and conscientious objection to transgenderism in our judgment are incompatible with human dignity and conflict with the fundamental rights of others, specifically here, transgender individuals.”

UK doctor David Mackereth says he was terminated for his refusal to use transgender patients’ preferred pronouns, a decision that has now been upheld by a tribunal.

In a conversation with staff, Mackereth said he could not in good conscience use pronouns that do not align with the biological sex of his patients. His statement eventually led to termination after 30 years of employment.

The tribunal claimed that Mackereth’s beliefs were “incompatible with human dignity,” stating in the ruling:

“Belief in Genesis 1:27, lack of belief in transgenderism and conscientious objection to transgenderism in our judgment are incompatible with human dignity and conflict with the fundamental rights of others, specifically here, transgender individuals.”

Mackereth was unwavering in his response:

“Without intellectual and moral integrity, medicine cannot function and my 30 years as a doctor are now considered irrelevant compared to the risk that someone else might be offended…I believe that I have to appeal in order to fight for the freedom of Christians to speak the truth. If they cannot, then freedom of speech has died in this country, with serious ramifications for the practise of medicine in the UK.”

Mackereth said he will be appealing the decision to a higher authority to “fight for the freedoms of Christians.”
