Chattanooga Christian School’s Mary Catherina Schimpf has a full stage

Mary Catherine Schimpf has an enviable problem when it comes to planning musical productions at Chattanooga Christian School. She has to choose a production that features a large cast and crew.

So many kids signed up for roles in the upcoming production of “Peter Pan,” she had to turn people away.

Now in her sixth year at the school, Schimpf said she is proud of the job the theater staff has done in building the program.

Q: Tell us about the theater program at CCS.
A: We do a fall musical and a spring production and several student-directed plays every year. We will have 60 cast members for “Peter Pan,” plus dozens on the crew and set builders. The parents help, too. When everything is up and moving, it is a true community event. The parents will be flying the kids and helping with costumes and whatever else is needed. The kids make their own costumes and help paint or build sets. They do several roles.

Q: Do you mean onstage roles?
A: No. Each actor has to do other tasks. They have hours to fulfill. This way they see the work involved in everything, and it helps do away with the prima donna attitudes. Plus, it helps them own the production…
