Charlotte (NC) TV Station interviews family of ARP Soldier killed in Iraq

Written by Tom Roussey, WBTV | Wednesday, September 15, 2010

Schedule for viewing and funeral of James McClamrock are included at the end of the article.

Amid tears, Susan McClamrock talked about her son Monday.

“I think that’s what hurts so badly is that we lost a good man that day,” she said. “A good son and a good husband.”

22-year old James McClamrock and another man were the first two soldiers killed in Iraq since President Obama declared combat operations officially over.

They were killed on September 7th after a man wearing an Iraqi military uniform opened fire on American soldiers who had considered him an ally.

The man was then killed by return fire and it’s still unclear why he shot at the American soldiers.

On Monday afternoon WBTV spoke with James McClamrock’s parents and young widow inside the sanctuary of the Concord Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, where James’s father Mark is pastor.

The family says James was a committed Christian and a patriotic soldier who loved being in the army. They say he died doing what he loved.

“When we look back over his life, we have no regrets with him,” Susan said.

Shannah McClamrock had been married to James since June 14, 2008. She says early last year her husband began to seriously consider joining the army, and she didn’t want him to go at first. But she eventually changed her mind.

Editor’s Note: Funeral arrangements for James McClamrock are as follows. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, September 16, at the Hartsell Funeral Home at 460 Branchview Drive, NE (Highway 3), Concord. The funeral service will be held on Friday, September 17, at 4 p.m. at the Forest Hill United Methodist Church (265 Union Street North) in Concord. Forest Hill is located approximately two blocks up the street from Concord ARP Church.
