The Obamacare Decision

High court upholds most of healthcare law, ruling the individual mandate penalty a tax

Written by Emily Belz, WNS | Saturday, June 30, 2012

Lawyers who filed lawsuits against the contraceptive mandate…perked up at the court’s comments about the Commerce Clause. Roberts said the individual mandate amount to a “substantial expansion of the government’s power.” At another point he said the federal government could not compel people “to enter commerce precisely when they have chosen not to.”  For opponents... A Justice Paradox

Our justice system cannot bring complete recompense to the victims

Written by Barnabas Piper, WNS | Saturday, June 30, 2012

But there was justice done once that did more than hold a criminal accountable, which is ironic since it didn’t hold a criminal accountable at all. Instead, justice was done on an innocent man—a sentence of death and an execution for crimes He never committed.   Last Friday night was a victorious night for the... Continue Reading

We’re, Like, Damaging the English Language

Our best defense against tyranny and the loss of cultural memory is a language that maintains honesty, simplicity, and clarity

Written by John Erickson, WNS | Friday, June 29, 2012

English is our conduit to the founding documents of English-speaking civilization, the body of law, literature, and Scripture that shapes our understanding of what it means to be a God-made, civilized human being

Supreme Court ban on school prayer ban turns 50

“They took prayer out of schools-uh, and they put evolution in-uh.”

Written by Peter Smith, Courier-Journal | Friday, June 29, 2012

“With all respect, I think the Court has misapplied a great constitutional principle. I cannot see how an ‘official religion’ is established by letting those who want to say a prayer say it. On the contrary, I think that to deny the wish of these school children to join in reciting this prayer is to deny them the opportunity of sharing in the spiritual heritage of our Nation.”

Persecution Isn’t Just ‘Over There’

The Bible tells all Christians to expect persecution — and Americans are not excluded

Written by Carl Moeller | Thursday, June 28, 2012

As Hebrews 11:13-16 says: 13 These all died in faith, not having received the things promised, but having seen them and greeted them from afar, and having acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth. 14 For people who speak thus make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. 15 If they had been thinking of that land from which they had gone out, they would have had opportunity to return. 16 But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city.

Mohamed Morsi to pick woman and Christian as Egypt’s vice-presidents

New leader will make appointments once people chosen to fill the roles have been selected

Written by Abdel Rahman Hussein, The Guardian | Thursday, June 28, 2012

The president-elect continues to deliberate with the military and other political forces over the formation of his cabinet, which is expected to be led by an independent national figure and would not have an FJP majority.

The Baby in the Briefcase

A response to Ann-Marie Slaughter's "Why Women Still Can't Have It All"

Written by Megan Hill | Tuesday, June 26, 2012

In the bulk of her fourteen-page article, Slaughter debunks (or at least tweaks) several of what she calls “the half-truths that we hold dear.” She addresses three feminist mantras: “It’s possible if you are just committed enough,” “It’s possible if you marry the right person,” and “It’s possible if you sequence it right.” Then, Slaughter proposes several solutions.

Religious liberty is not optional

Catholic Bishops launch 'Fortnight for Freedom'

Written by William E. Lori, WashPo | Sunday, June 24, 2012

According to HHS, an entity deserves religious freedom only if it primarily hires and primarily serves its co-religionists. But the state has no competence or authority to define the church and her ministries, let alone to impose on her such a restrictive, inward-looking definition.

Why We Should Reexamine the Faith of Barack Obama

How Christians might think about the Gospel and the President.

Written by Owen Strachan | Saturday, June 23, 2012

Faith as construed by the President gives no offense and draws no boundaries. In the final analysis, what is missing from his theology is nothing other than the gospel, the message of God-given righteousness grounded in the cross of Christ that when received by faith and repentance runs roughshod over a sinner, transforming a ward of Satan into an angel of light. This exclusive reality—and the top-to-bottom ethic it creates—is noticeably lacking in President Obama's actions and proclamations.

Clerical Privilege and the Law

Should criminal confessions offered in religious settings be excluded from trial?

Written by David Skeel, WSJ | Thursday, June 21, 2012

Almost the only exception to the clergy-penitent privilege is for child abuse. Every state requires professionals, often including clergy, to report evidence of child abuse. But the requirements are aimed at abuse by a parent or guardian; they do not appear to cover the murder of a child by a stranger.
