The Hymns That Haunt Us

A newborn atheist just can't get the church's music out of her head.

Written by David Neff | Monday, August 27, 2012

Clement believed that music could build (or destroy) character. The pagans of his day sang at banquets and at domestic dinner tables. In the years before "church music" was invented, music had a place in the Christian home—as a way to welcome guests, to unite husband and wife in the same melodies, and to improve the character of the whole household.

How Giving to the Church is Changing, or, N.T. Wright Has His Hand in the Plate

Written by Megan Hill | Monday, August 27, 2012

Millennials are King David’s anti-type---they don’t own a house and can’t quite see why they should help God to have one, either.

Former “Christian Century” Editor James Wall and Palestinian Terror

The Palestinians who were sent to jail…saw themselves as resisting an occupying army

Written by Mark Tooley | Monday, August 27, 2012

The Israeli mother of one of the 15 murdered victims who died in the infamous Jerusalem Sbarro 2001 restaurant bombing is denouncing former longtime Christian Century editor James Wall for defending her daughter’s Palestinian murderer.

First-Person: Who Really Was the First U.S. Missionary?

A freed slave should supplant Adoniram Judson as the first Protestant missionary from America.

Written by Jason Duesing, BP | Sunday, August 26, 2012

Not only was George Liele the first Protestant missionary from America, but his departure for Jamaica in 1782 actually puts him ahead of the widely recognized progenitor of the modern missions era, the British Baptist, William Carey.     Earlier this year Jeremy Webber at Christianity Today asked: Was the first U.S. missionary black, not... Where Do ‘Liberal’ Bible Scholars Come From?

Is reading the Bible a cure for fundamentalism? That's how many so-called liberal Bible scholars got their start.

Written by Greg Carey | Thursday, August 23, 2012

Biblical scholarship is an academic discipline, taught and studied at universities, colleges and divinity schools all around the world. So it should be no surprise that biblical scholars run in all shapes, sizes, colors and denominations. What would surprise many people, though, is that a very large number of us love Jesus and the church,... Continue Reading

Monastery where Christian saint was martyred is uncovered on Scottish island, Eigg

Donnan and 50 monks were killed in 617 by Norsemen, their deaths being recorded in the Irish Annals

Written by Alistair Munro, The Scotsman | Thursday, August 23, 2012

Donnan died in 617AD and monasteries of that time had circular or sub-circular walls which separate the world of God on the inside from the world outside. “We found remains of a sub-circular enclosure and remains of seventh century activity, which would fit in with Donnan’s time.

GOP Senate candidate from Missouri comes under fire for his remarks on rape and abortion

An article in the St. Louis Post Dispatch after deadline to withdraw indicates Akin remains in the race

Written by Jamie Dean | Wednesday, August 22, 2012

The congressman—who earned a Masters of Divinity from Covenant Theological Seminary in St. Louis in 1984—has also served as a board member of the Missouri Right to Life…The announcement identified Akin as a ruling elder at Twin Oaks Presbyterian Church (Presbyterian Church in America) in Ballwin, Mo. (Ed. Note: He is not currently an active elder.)

Two Women, Two Legacies

Reflections on the passing of Helen Gurley Brown and Nellie Gray

Written by Barbara Curtis, WNS | Wednesday, August 22, 2012

“For Nellie, the horror was that a single human life had been intentionally taken. That was the point at which government transgressed its proper authority. That was the evil that had to be stopped.”

The Theological Roots of Missouri Senate Candidate Todd Akin’s “Legitimate Rape” Comment

Akin is proud of how his religion, and in particular, the PCA, the deeply conservative Calvinist denomination founded in 1973, influences his political views

Written by Sarah Posner, Religion Dispatches | Tuesday, August 21, 2012

Akin has a Masters in Divinity from the PCA’s seminary, and proudly claims he took a political rather than a pastoral path after seminary. His denomination has not only opposed abortion in all cases, including rape, but has suggested that the number of pregnancies by rape is overstated, and even questioned the veracity of rape claims. And Akin, who in a few months could be a United States Senator, wants his religion to dictate our laws.

Scripture, Song and Six Grandchildren: Romneys Open Church Doors to Press

The campaign’s decision to allow reporters into church was something of a surprise.

Written by Michael Barbaro & Ashley Parker, NYTimes | Tuesday, August 21, 2012

Mr. and Mrs. Romney sang along to hymns and took turns holding their grandchildren during the service, which was attended by about 100 people. At times, Mr. Romney flipped through a picture book with his grandson Johnny.
