10 Counterfeit Christ Figures We Should Stop Worshiping
We need to reject these partial deities we’ve created and embrace the real Christ
“What are some ways we are tempted to mold Jesus, like clay, into whatever we want him to be? Here are 10 partial Jesus’ popular in Christian culture.” Jesus is still very popular these days, even at a time when Christianity seems to be facing more social marginalization. From political and social movements to... Continue Reading
Being Biblical and unChristian
Sometimes our blind spots are our hobby horses. And this is a problem.
“But here is the irony: too often the most ‘biblical’ folks are the most ‘unbiblical’. What do I mean by this? I mean that if the whole point of the Bible is the person and work of Jesus and you fail to make this your whole point in your life, preaching, writing, conferences, etc…then you... Continue Reading
Three False Gospels You May Not Realize Are in Your Church
Here are a few of the false gospels that have crept into even the most sound of churches
“While the Scriptures do teach us to be kind and compassionate towards others, it does not teach us to do so at the expense of truth. This is where the gospel is compromised, and becomes a false gospel. We don’t want to offend people. It’s okay to talk about the positive things in Christianity, but... Continue Reading
The College That Hates ‘Americans’
A University of New Hampshire speech guide explains why just about every adjective — including “American” — is somehow problematic.
Instead of referring to the elderly as senior citizens (or even as the elderly), members of the UNH community are encouraged to embrace the most up-to-date politically-correct terminology: “people of advanced age” in this case, according to the guide. This is supposed to be somehow less derogatory than “senior citizen,” which of course was once... Continue Reading
Faith Has Its Reasons
Considering faith in relation to what may be its opposites — reason and perception
“We live in the most anti-intellectual age of history, and even many Christians believe we can compartmentalize faith as a way of knowing completely separate from sense perception and reason. Yet as Augustine told us centuries ago, how could we receive knowledge from God if it were not accessible to the human mind?” Christians... Continue Reading
Killing Sin by the Spirit, Post 4 (Put Off and Put On)
The Bible calls us to the daily exercise of putting off the practices of the "old self" and putting on the practices of our "new self."
Colossians 3 and Ephesians 4 give a number of specific examples of this kind of behavior change, but these chapters are not giving us exhaustive lists. Notice also that when Paul tells us to put off sinful patterns in these chapters, he also uses the language of putting these things to death. In other words,... Continue Reading
He Who Has Ears
Every individual in the congregation has responsibilities when the Word of God is preached.
Dear Christian, you may be sitting in corporate worship while the pastor is preaching, but this is no idle exercise. We are to be engaged with the Word. The little effect many sermons have upon listeners is less often due to the preacher’s lack of skill in preaching, but rather due to our lack of... Continue Reading
The Shrug That Scares Me to Death
It frightens me to think we live in a society that knows full well what we are doing and simply doesn’t care.
The shrug is the sign we have become a shell of humanity – a soulless society where the baby hearts we sell are bigger than our hearts that are still beating. We live in a world in which people can look square into the faces of tiny human beings and talk about how much money... Continue Reading
It’s Good to be a Sheep
Amidst a culture and a society that prides itself on celebrating individuality to the point of rebellion, obedience to the voice of the Good Shepherd such that we blend in and don’t stick out among the flock seems ludicrous, ignorant, and even enslaving.
But for those who hear the voice of Christ, and are known by Him, they follow their Shepherd (John 10:27). In this sense, sticking out, going against the flow, and not blending in would be a sign of disobedience and rebellion. We are not autonomous. As followers of Christ, we revel in our lack of... Not All Conservatives
But what if not all gender conservatives are complementarians?
I grew up in a low-income setting where people didn’t have much choice about which “jobs” they took. Today I live and worship in a working-class community where very few of the women in our church have the luxury of not working outside the home. Even fewer would have the luxury of turning down a promotion... Continue Reading
