Who Needs Creeds When I’ve Got a Bible?
An Excerpt from What Christians Ought to Believe
The problem is that it is no good just to say, “We believe the Bible!” Noble as that might sound, it runs into several problems. The fact is that many groups claim to believe the Bible, including Baptists, Episcopalians, Catholics, Methodists, Presbyterians, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Oneness Pentecostals, and many more. Yet you cannot help but notice that... Continue Reading
Fear Not, the Universe is Wildly Out of Your Control
Things are wildly out of my control but they are not out of control.
In day to day life there was so much I could control: which route to take through traffic, which task to work on first, what to do on a free night with the family, where to buy a house. But in reality there was far, far more outside my control than inside it. I didn’t... Continue Reading
Hopelessness and Hope: the End of Roe vs. Wade
The US Supreme Court struck down Texas’ attempts to regulate abortions by ensuring that the “surgical centers” that preformed them met the same regulations as every other surgery center in the state.
But the law seemed to be on the pro-life side of this issue. After all, Roe vs. Wade expressly said that before the age of “viability” abortion should be regulated by the state’s legislatures. In this case, Texas did just that. And they didn’t really even over-reach. Their legislation was specifically tailored after Supreme Court... Continue Reading
On the Word “Heresy”
Part of the problem has been that in using the word ‘heresy’ (which I didn’t but do now) we have been talking past each other.
A couple of implications follow, given my role as a Presbyterian minister of the gospel. I have the responsibility to make sure that my parishioners are aware of the problematic nature of this teaching, since these views are widely published. I also have the responsibility to make sure that men who hold these views are... Continue Reading
Taking Back Christianese #2: “Preach the Gospel; If Necessary, Use Words”
In American evangelicalism over the last decade, there has been a resurgence of interest in what might be called “deed” ministry.
This phrase can give the impression that good deeds are primary, and that gospel proclamation is secondary. On the contrary, the Bible makes it clear that “Word ministry”– the proclamation of the gospel and the instruction of God’s people–is the core mission of the church. While deeds of mercy might be a natural response to... Continue Reading
Letting the Control Freak Go
Are we control freaks or do we completely and contentedly trust God?
Isn’t it good to know that Jesus trusted the Father in our stead? He was the one who was sorely troubled and yet left the garden and walked towards his accusers. He was the one who yelled out upon the cross, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit” (Luke 23:46). He trusted on behalf... Continue Reading
Do Christians Really Support Religious Liberty? (Part Two)
Instead of advocating religious liberty, maybe Christians are really in the business of advocating a form of liberty closer to that defended by the American Civil Liberties Union
“If one Christian baker will make a wedding cake for a gay couple and another baker won’t, how is government supposed to decide? Christians who take faith so personally and without regard to what a church teaches or to what their fellow believers confess and observe give government almost no remedy for accommodating them.” ... The Difference Between Sola Scriptura And Biblicism
In biblicism the interpreter, not Scripture, becomes sovereign
“Scripture is sufficient and it is sufficiently clear but, because of sin, our minds are not always clear. I cannot count the number of conversations I’ve had with rationalists, i,e,, those who place the authority of the intellect above all other authorities and mystics, i.e., those who place the authority of religious experience above Scripture, who... Seven Biblical Truths That Can Bring Us Great Happiness
What truths should raise our expectations of happiness? Here are seven.
“Nothing we’ve done or can ever do will surprise God or cause Him to change His mind about us. No skeletons will fall out of our closets in eternity. He has seen us at our worst and still loves us. Arms wide open, He invites our confession and repentance, which He always meets with His... Continue Reading
For Evangelicals, The Question Has Become: Which is a Worse Sin, Abortion or Racism?
For decades, abortion has been the mother of all deciding issues for evangelicals
Abortion “is the single greatest issue of our time, I don’t disagree, but in responding negatively [when he raises the subject of race], it shows they don’t want to think about race and racism,” Thabiti Anyabwile, an African American pastor in Southeast Washington and a council member of the conservative evangelical network the Gospel Coalition, said in an...
