The Golden Chain of William Perkins

He made especially important contributions to Protestant preaching, ethics, pastoral counselling, and the role of conscience in the Christian life. But his most notable contributions were in theology, especially relating to predestination and Christian assurance.

Written by Matthew Payne | Saturday, August 27, 2022

Perkins held to double-predestination is well-known: it was memorably laid out in the large fold-out chart which accompanied his work, A Golden Chain (rev.1592). In that work Perkins describes individual human destiny as sovereignly determined by God, with all persons either being predestined to salvation in Christ, or damnation apart from him. The idea of... Written by Ascension Presbytery Study Committee | Friday, August 26, 2022

At its July 30, 2022 stated meeting, The Ascension Presbytery voted, by a voice vote, to receive the Report of their Ad Interim Committee to Study “Still Time To Care,” by Greg Johnson. In its conclusion the Study Committee stated: “Our careful interaction with this work has demonstrated to us that there are several areas of agreement... Continue Reading

What Is ‘Gay Christianity’?

Throughout two thousand years of church history, Christians have understood—and Christian churches have taught—that homosexuality is a sin.

Written by M. D. Perkins | Monday, August 22, 2022

The book Dangerous Affirmation is intended to serve as an introduction, rebuttal, and warning. It was written to help the average person in the pew to understand what is being argued by major “gay Christian” thinkers and to respond to it biblically. Although the Bible is the primary focus, I did not shy away from... Continue Reading

An Introduction to John Owen: A Christian Vision for Every Stage of Life, by Crawford Gribben

Seasoned Owen readers will discover fresh insights into some of his key writings.

Written by Guy Davies | Monday, August 22, 2022

In his conclusion the author reflects on Owen’s lasting impact on society and the the church. The old Puritan’s ideas on religious toleration helped to sow the seeds of classic liberalism. His theological writings are the subject of renewed attention in the contemporary Evangelical world. Crawford Gribben has ably opened up John Owen’s Christian vision for every stage... Review: “150 Questions About The Psalter”

The questions are not intended to be memorized, but to be used along with singing the Psalms to increase both one’s knowledge and love of the Psalms.

Written by Zach Keele | Sunday, August 21, 2022

Overall, this book is a fine introduction to the Psalms and the singing of them. It is thorough in its scope, readable in its language, and practical for both worship and piety. And maybe most importantly, it directs the reader to the Psalms themselves. As Johnston notes again in the preface, you cannot love a... Continue Reading

Politics, Creation and New Creation

To think biblically about political matters, believers need to look both to the past and to the future.

Written by Bill Muehlenberg | Saturday, August 20, 2022

Governments are not merely a response to sin, but are also affected by sin. Governments can become “beastly”; they can function as objects of idolatrous designs. They can – even when they claim to be maintaining “law and order” – commit themselves to injustice, unrighteousness, and oppression…Since we are already citizens of God’s commonwealth, we must find effective... A Present Urgency

The evangelical world, at least in America, has become spiritually disoriented and profoundly worldly.

Written by Bruce A. Little | Thursday, August 18, 2022

Over the last 20 years, there have been a number of insane turns within evangelicalism. These turns were not away from theology, but as David Wells said it has been a turn to a different theology. Most disheartening in all of this is that Christians in the pew have been cheated from the treasure of... Continue Reading

How to Read and Understand God’s Word

Book Review: The Epic Story of the Bible: How to Read and Understand God’s Word by Greg Gilbert.

Written by Tim Challies | Thursday, August 18, 2022

The Epic Story of the Bible is meant to help them not only learn what they are missing but also help them to set out and complete that epic, beautiful, and rewarding trek. And I am convinced it will serve well in accomplishing that very purpose. I highly recommend reading it—and highly recommend buying a few... Continue Reading

Music: Theology’s Seasoning

Music plays an important role in keeping theology palatable for the saint.

Written by Pakman | Thursday, August 11, 2022

Hymns are Dominantly God-Centered. Most hymns that have lasted the test of time are God-centered hymns. Even songs about personal sanctification often have the intention to draw your eyes to Christ in the midst of your trials. This is the ultimate point isn’t it? A life experiencing hardship tests the saint’s commitment to resolutely keep God... Continue Reading

How to Save Shakespeare and the Western Civilization He Espoused

R.V. Young defends Shakespeare from anti-Western and anti-Christian critics in his book, "Shakespeare and the Idea of Western Civilization."

Written by Paul Krause | Monday, August 8, 2022

“Shakespeare and the Idea of Western Civilization” is the Shakespeare book we need in this age of abuse and hatred. We find love and wisdom through its marvelous pilgrimage. And we find the true Shakespeare who has been buried by “the scholars” because of their ideological prejudices.   We live in an age of hatred:... Continue Reading
