Las Cruces, NM Police Investigate Explosions Near Calvary Baptist, Holy Cross Churches
Explosions about a half hour apart shattered the serenity of morning services at two Las Cruces churches Sunday, but caused no injuries and only minor damage.
“It was a real bomb, I saw all the parts,” said Cavalry Baptist member Dennis Llewellyn, who said he was outside the church when the explosive went off. Llewellyn said he was a former special forces member with the Marines and recognized bomb parts that included an Eveready battery. He and fellow church member Mike... Continue Reading
Keeping Gossip Out of Prayer Requests
How do we keep gossip out of our prayer ministries?
Anyone can be tempted to gossip. But we can avoid it if we slow down and evaluate whether we are the right person, with the right motivation, talking to the right audience with the right information. A good prayer request comes from the good stored up in a good heart, and one day, we’ll all... Continue Reading
This Is The Last Post You Will Ever Need To Read On Why They Don’t Sing In Church Anymore
This is NOT the last post you will ever need to read on how to get churches to sing once again, but we do need long-term conversations on this
We may not be able to turn the tide in the rest of our culture, but with intentionality over the next generations, we can change the culture of singing in the church. This is not a non-essential of faith. This is not adiaphora. This is important stuff. If the ancient principal of lex orandi, lex credendi is true, if... Continue Reading
Former Pastor of First Presbyterian, Columbus, Ga., to Lead New Congregation
Rev. Charles Hasty, former pastor of First Presbyterian of Columbus, has accepted a call to a new flock
“Hasty, who has said he was neutral on the issue, resigned as senior pastor of First Presbyterian in Columbus, Ga., in May. At the time, he wrote an email to members of First Presbyterian saying: “My heart, like all of yours, is broken in the wake of the fractured vote for gracious dismissal and the... Continue Reading
Musings On How Big Is The PC(USA) Big Tent – Part 2: He’s In My Church?
Donald Trump is a Presbyterian? My reaction to the reaction is “If the PC(USA) is a big, inclusive tent why can it not include him?”
But returning to the thought experiment, my question is not really about the specific individual here except to the extent that based on his history we know that he has been confirmed in a predecessor denomination and he self-identifies as a Presbyterian. But we also know that he is outspoken and has views not in... Continue Reading
5 Warning Signs for the Church in a “Facebook Culture”
Here are a few characteristics of a “Facebook culture” that we certainly need to reckon with as believers.
“Surfacey” interactions/artificial relationships. …. people might feel more connected, but they can really be more distant, at least from who they really are. In contrast, true Christian fellowship requires that we engage with people as we really are, so that we can honestly face our sin and grow together in Christ. One of my... Continue Reading
Can Hipster Christianity Save Churches From Decline?
What happens when churches become too driven by the desire to be trend-savvy and culturally relevant?
Many don’t want the church to be like a sceney bar or a stylish boutique. They want the church to be the church: an institution that embraces awkward people, confronts sin, transforms lives, subverts the sovereignty of self, serves others and provides meaning more substantial than the ephemera of fickle fads. Do people want... Continue Reading
Rebuilding a Marriage Culture: A Fourfold Mission for the Church
We need to live out the truth about marriage and human sexuality
“The church needs to present a case for biblical sexuality that is appealing and that engages the best of modern thought. The virtues of chastity and lifelong marriage are enriching, but after fifty years, the church has still not devised a compelling response to the sexual revolution.” The Supreme Court’s ruling in Obergefell v.... Taking a Minute before you Judge and Condemn
When church discipline is practiced it shouldn’t be handled in a foolish and harmful manner, in haste or with legalism; it can destroy the unity of Christ’s body
Therefore, let us take a minute before we judge and condemn. Let us listen well to our brothers. Let us evaluate our conclusions and see if we are rushing to judgment. Let us make sure we are not being legalists and condemning someone when they have not broken God’s Law. Let us not be weary of creativity.... Continue Reading
Church Planting that Kills the Church
Healthy church planting should not be largely reliant on transfer growth
“If we don’t make evangelism a priority, we will slowly but surely revert to the easier position of adopting a silent strategy of relying on transfer growth. That in itself is a massive issue – albeit hardly a new one. But when this mindset creeps into church planting networks, it is even more toxic.” ... Continue Reading
