California megachurch pastor resigns for spiritual reasons to seek a new calling

Written by Angela Lu | Thursday, April 22, 2010

From Wikipedia: “Francis said he felt convicted to sacrifice more for God. “Chan gives away 90 percent of his income … Chan doesn’t take a salary, and has donated all of his book royalties, which total about $500,000 to charities.”

Francis Chan, author of Crazy Love and the pastor at Cornerstone Church in Simi Valley, Calif., announced that he will be leaving his church next month to follow God’s calling to a different type of ministry.

After pastoring in the church for 16 years, Chan feels that God is calling him to “do church differently” and although he is not completely sure what that means, he feels drawn to minister in the heart of a big city like L.A. The well-known pastor hopes to go somewhere where he is obscure and talk to people who don’t know who he is.

He has talked through his departure from Cornerstone with the elders of the church and his own family, and both are supportive of his decision.

Chan has mixed feelings about leaving, but has felt a restlessness and stirring to let go of the church for years.

“I started to just feel too much like this earth was my home in some ways – you know you just get your roots in and get comfortable. And then I started feeling this call and there’s all sorts of fears,” he said in an interview with Catalyst.
