Both Pro Life and Pro Choice Leadership decry promised Presidential Executive Order on abortion

Written by Don K. Clements | Sunday, March 21, 2010

Descriptions include claims of : “Phantom”, “Illusion,” “Tragedy,” “No Way,” “Won’t Survive,” “Fantasy,” “Not Worth The Paper,” “Slap In The Face,” and from the National Organization for Women, “Incensed”

The White House announced on Sunday that President Obama would issue an executive order on abortion after the House approves the health-care bill assuring that no federal funds would be used to subsidize the procedure. That was enough to secure the support of a group of Catholic Democrats who represented the swing votes on the legislation.

However, the internet was immediately filled with press releases and media statements indicating that other than the Congressmen who appeared to be looking for a way to vote for the health care proposals AND maintain a pro-life position, no one was happy.

While press releases are seldom seen on the newswires on the weekend, especially on Sundays, by 7:00PM Sunday there were more than a dozen. Below are links to just a few of the statements:

National Organization for Women President Terry O’Neill issued a statement Sunday afternoon slamming President Obama, saying that he had broken his faith with women by agreeing to issue an executive order that prohibits federal funding for abortions:.

The National Right to Life Committee (NRLC) remains strongly opposed to the Senate-passed health bill (H.R. 3590). A lawmaker who votes for this bill is voting to require federal agencies to subsidize and administer health plans that will pay for elective abortion, and voting to undermine longstanding pro-life policies in other ways as well.

Concerned Women for America: Rep. Bart Stupak (D- Michigan) and five other formerly pro-life Democrats have reached a deal that would give them “political cover” to vote in favor of the President’s health care bill. Their sellout ensures that this bill will indeed be the largest expansion of abortion since Roe v. Wade.

Family Research Council President Tony Perkins released the following statement: “Those few pro-life Democrats that would place the fate of the unborn in the hands of the President, will be placing their own political fate in those same hands secured only by a promise that runs counter to everything he has said and done.
