Belhaven University offers college credits to qualified high school students.

Written by Nancy Lee | Tuesday, July 27, 2010

Students completing a two-year virtual course, Western Civilization and Worldviews, (also known as High Scholars) can earn up to 24 credits towards their college degree.

Courses are transferable to most accredited colleges and universities. Belhaven sponsors this unique dual-enrollment for home schooled junior and senior high school students.

The virtual classroom is an ideal environment for high school students in a home school setting, and gives a whole new meaning to distance learning. Students participate in real-time discussions with teachers and classmates from all over the world.

The two-year course provides a seamless integration of history, literature and the arts from a biblical perspective. This exciting curriculum is designed to provide a Christian learning experience that goes beyond mere facts. Through personal mentoring by Christian instructors and virtual on-line discussions with peers, students are challenged to think deeply and biblically in all areas of life and culture.

One recent High Scholars student says, “…one of the most enjoyable classes that I took in all four years of high school. Many online courses allow students to be passive and skate by without doing much work at all while the teachers are distant and unavailable for questions or extraneous help… was quite challenging and engaging, and the teachers and faculty made themselves available for all of the students’ needs…I was challenged to think about what I really believed, sharpened by discussions with fellow students on the Quad, and given the tools to think and reason through the lens of a Christian Worldview.”

The program fulfills academic requirements in history, literature, art analysis and Bible. Classes take students on a journey through the great cultures of Western Civilization, going beyond mere facts to offer students a profound biblical perspective. Students sharpen their biblical worldview as they study and critique the belief system of each culture while addressing inherent philosophical, political, and ethical issues. This unique approach teaches students the value of a Christian worldview for shaping a prosperous and healthy society. More important, as a result of their studies, students will develop their own personal worldview, based on the Bible.

Another student said, “High Scholars is an excellent worldview program that gives a thorough overview of Western history. Every culture, historical event, or literary work covered is scrutinized for its prevailing worldview and contrasted with the Bible. This program does not just teach history, literature, and culture; it teaches students how to think and consequently live out a biblical worldview.”
