Belhaven University Offers a Supplement for Homeschoolers

Written by Staff | Wednesday, December 8, 2010

Concerned parents all over the world are opting out of public education and educating their children at home.

While this is often the best choice for a quality, biblical education, homeschoolers often miss out on the energy and confidence that comes from classroom discussion, with Christian instructors who are experts in their field.

Belhaven University has addressed this issue by providing real-time discussions for students enrolled on their Virtual Campus. 11th and 12th graders join with students from all over the world in a two-year Western Civilization curriculum, taught from a biblical worldview perspective. These virtual classes offer 24 credits towards an accredited University diploma.

Belhaven achieves a blend of individual effort and real-time class interaction through weekly lectures recorded by Belhaven faculty, and accompanied by power points, study guides, and related assignments. These individual activities prepare students for three hours of real-time discussion with their instructor and classmates.

Students discuss issues, debate their views and create individual and group presentations. A spirit of discipleship develops between students and instructors and confidence grows as members learn from each other.

Western Civilization Worldviews is really three courses, History, Literature, and Art, taught by three Belhaven University instructors. Students receive grades and college credits for each subject. The instructors work as a team, to integrate the courses, giving students deeper insight into each culture and its unique worldview.

Enthusiasm for this form of education has been growing and students testify to its success.

Quotes:
“I love the way High Scholars teaches us about a culture’s literature, art, and history through a Biblical lens. For instance, one of the things that I’ve really taken away from this course is God’s supremacy and authority throughout history. I also think that High Scholars has given me a more comprehensive and detailed view of past civilizations because we learn about a people through three different mediums. This has helped me view the peoples we’ve studied as real cultures, and not just a lot of dry history.”

“I’ve never really had an art course before and I like how you can see the worldview of a culture in its art.”

“I really like the variety of assignments, especially in Geography/History. I’m glad everything isn’t just like ‘write a paper.’”

“The Literature section is interesting in that we go in depth and beneath the surface of a work and discuss it. That’s pretty cool.”

“I love our QUAD times together. My teachers and my fellow students bring up a lot of interesting points, which I feel sure I wouldn’t think of otherwise.”

“I also like how the class works so that we can understand how God fits in with each culture.”

“Belhaven High Scholars is not only my favorite class(es) this year, but quite possibly one of the favorite classes of my high school experience.”

“The HALL lectures are awesome. I feel like that is probably the part of the week where I learn the most.”
