A Book and Two Bits About Busyness

To conquer busyness we need not only to set priorities, but to respect that others must set them too. This means understanding when people say no

Written by Kevin DeYoung | Wednesday, October 3, 2012

My next writing project is a book on busyness. I meant to work on it this summer but ran out of time. Seriously.

Yale May Not Recognize New Christian fraternity

BYX membership requirements may violate school's nondiscrimination policy

Written by Catherine Rogers, WNS | Wednesday, October 3, 2012

If the BYX chapter at Yale lasts through the fall semester, the group plans to participate in its first Rush Week in the spring, alongside Yale's other 11 fraternities. With the new members they may gain, the chapter hopes to establish a permanent off-campus location next year

Puritans and Propaganda

Holy Hip-Hop Controversy: Rapper Propaganda’s blistering critique of Puritanism’s racist history has some Reformed listeners crying foul.

Written by Anthony Bradley | Tuesday, October 2, 2012

Is criticizing the racist roots of Puritanism out of bounds? That’s what some Calvinists are debating following Christian rapper Propaganda’s scathing indictment of Puritan history.

Church of England deadlocked over new leader

The 105th Archbishop of Canterbury will take over at a painful time for a church divided by long-running debates over sexuality and senior roles for women clergy

Written by Peter Griffiths, Reuters | Tuesday, October 2, 2012

The head of the Catholic Church in England and Wales, Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor, expressed sympathy for the winning candidate. "They all get hammered, you know, the Archbishops of Canterbury," he told the Sunday Telegraph newspaper. "I have sympathy. Everybody's saying it's an impossible job."

Bible Verses on Banners Kick Off Texas Conflict

Cheerleaders' Scripture-Quoting Football Signs Face Constitutional Challenge

Written by Ann Zimmerman, WSJ | Tuesday, October 2, 2012

In a letter to the Kountze superintendent, (the Texas Attorney General) characterized the move from the Freedom from Religion Foundation as "menacing and misleading" and said the "organization has a long history of attempting to bully school districts into adopting restrictive religious speech policies that go well beyond what is required by the United States Constitution."

“Center Church” by Tim Keller – A Review

It is the best book outlining the theological vision and philosophy of ministry prior to determining specifics church models, ministry programs, and methods of multiplication

Written by Daniel F. Wells | Tuesday, October 2, 2012

Keller begins his discussion about the city by critiquing romanticized views of the city (p. 135). Keller even admits that the contrasts between city, suburb, and town are general and that some locations blur the distinction (p. 136). In the end, Keller commends ministry in all locales and believes Center Church is helpful to churches in non-urban contexts (p. 381).

Confidential Search Committee Report

Timothy: Too young! Methuselah: Too old . . . WAY too old!

Written by Staff | Tuesday, October 2, 2012

The pool of "executive search for church jokes" is pretty thin, but here's a good read. It's an oldie, but a goodie.....while circulated a lot, to our knowledge, the author is unknown.

Is “church” a place or a people?

Understanding The Missional Church - a body of people sent on a mission.

Written by Curt McDaniel | Tuesday, October 2, 2012

Mission is not something the church does as a “department” of its total program. The church’s essence is missional, for the calling and sending action of God forms its identity. Mission is founded on the mission of God in the world, rather than the church’s efforts to extend itself

Four Carnival Mirrors of Ministry

Mirrors of Knowledge, Experience, Success, and Celebrity

Written by Paul Tripp | Tuesday, October 2, 2012

Pastor, do you examine yourself daily by humbly placing yourself before the one mirror you can trust, the mirror of the Word of God? Or have you fallen into the habit of looking into carnival mirrors that will only ever give you a misshapen view of your spiritual journey?

(ir)Regular (un)Discipline: When Presbyterians wink and nod at open violations of covenant life

I believe we have lost the will to fight, even for what we know is right.

Written by Carmen Fowler LaBerge | Tuesday, October 2, 2012

There are many PCUSA churches that call themselves progressive and some of those churches have defined what that means by aligning themselves with others at progressivechristianity.org.
