Loftis is charged with breaking into the church about 10:40 p.m. Monday [07/20/2020]. The 5-foot-9 man was captured on surveillance video entering the church through a back door, court documents said.  “Once inside he walked through the building throwing equipment and instruments around and was observed inside the sanctuary,” the documents said.

A 29-year-old man said he started a fire at a Glasgow church “out of vengeance and anger,” according to court documents.

Court documents obtained by Delaware Online/The News Journal also state that Thomas Loftis III threw video equipment and musical instruments after making his way into Reach Church [a Presbyterian Church in America congregation] Monday night.

Church officials could not be reached for comment Thursday or Friday.

The documents said he started fires using a lighter. Different fires were set on the pews and window curtains in the sanctuary. Damage was estimated at more than $250,000….

The Fire Marshal’s Office said news media reports and social media led to the “quick apprehension of the suspect.”

The fire, which was reported shortly before 11 p.m. Monday, caused about $250,000 in damages.
