Problem is, we don’t have that option. We don’t get to vote on what is and is not God’s word, what is and is not a sin. That is up to God. To change what the Bible says about homosexuality would be to deny God’s very word and bring judgment on ourselves. To try and change God’s word would be like trying to change His character. We cannot do that even if we wanted to. God is holy, just, righteous, without spot or blemish, perfect in all His ways.
I am pleased to see that there are evangelicals preparing to stand in civil disobedience against the coming Supreme Court ruling on same-sex marriage. This is assuming the ruling will go against biblical definitions of marriage. I don’t have high-hopes from the court. Therefore we will need to be organized as believers when the time comes and to prepare our response to the decision if the court imposes SSM upon us.
In a story on LifeSiteNews, evangelicals are declaring their resolve to stand against the decision:
Dozens of Christian leaders have vowed they will not remain silent, as they did following the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision, promising to take nonviolent direct action if the High Court votes to redefine marriage.
The Supreme Court is deciding two separate issues: Whether the 14th Amendment guarantees same-sex “marriage” as a constitutional right, and whether states must honor same-sex “marriages” contracted in states that have voted – or, more likely, where an unelected judge has forcibly determined – to redefine marriage.
“We believe that the majority of the Court will rule in favor of elevating what we have always taught to be a sinful lifestyle to the stature of a civil right — forcing us to choose between their ruling and our religious convictions that are based on Scripture,” said Rick Scarborough, a former Southern Baptist minister who now heads Vision America Action. “Christians are being declared the lawbreakers when we are simply living by what we have always believed and by a set of laws that the culture historically has agreed to.”
As true Christians, we really do not have a choice in the matter. We can either be obedient to Christ and His word concerning marriage and homosexuality, or we can be disobedient to Christ and go with the world. If we choose the latter, we must realize the deep implications of this for our spiritual wellbeing.
“Also I say to you, whoever confesses Me before men, him the Son of Man also will confess before the angels of God. But he who denies Me before men will be denied before the angels of God (Luke 12:8-9).”
To deny His word is to deny Him. Jesus was not tolerant of sin. He did not wink at it. He did not redefine it. He died on the cross to atone for it. So please never make the mistake of thinking God’s love would just cover over and look the other way at our sin. Our sin cost our Savior dearly. He did not die on the cross so that we run off and lead sinful lives. He would not have us turn our backs on what He has declared as sinful. He would not have us decide what is sinful and not sinful. We must remain true, faithful and obedient to His word. We cannot change the definition of sin.
Which is interesting because in a New York Times Op-Ed piece this past weekend, the writer is demanding just that: that we redefined homosexuality as non-sinful. That would be like asking a leopard to change its spots.
