An Open Letter to the President of Liberty University: Reconsider your decision to invite Mitt Romney to speak!

Written by John Makujina | Saturday, April 28, 2012

Much of the growth occurs through the relentless efforts of their 60,000 missionaries, who are responsible for converting about 250,000 individuals a year. In fact, Mormons like to brag, “We baptize a Baptist church every week.”

Dear Rev. Falwell:

I was deeply disturbed at the news that Liberty University has invited Gov. Mitt Romney as their commencement speaker. I do not quite know what would motivate a university with high Christian ideals and a commitment to the fundamentals of the faith to ask a Mormon to speak at commencement. I fear, however, that Liberty’s dedication to the RNC and to the success of the conservative movement has trumped its allegiance to sound doctrine and the Gospel.

Although popular wisdom dictates that this election is about a Commander in Chief and not a “Theologian in Chief,” in reality religion has everything to do with this election. Mitt Romney is not a nominal Mormon, as some imagine, but a “TBM,” a “True Blue Mormon,” and has the rank to prove it.

He fully believes that a pathological liar like Joseph Smith, Jr. was a true prophet of God, sent to restore the church from its apostasy. He is a staunch defender of his faith and will himself resort to deceit in order to deflect criticism from his religion: he has publicly stated that the most unusual article of faith in Mormonism is its belief in a universal flood!?!?! I am sure you will agree that this is a blatant and rehearsed falsehood, intended to avoid disclosure of the blasphemous teachings of his church.

More importantly, the Mormon Church stands to benefit enormously through a Romney presidency. Analysts are expecting a huge spike in Mormon conversions if Romney becomes president. Even common sense dictates that, with a Mormon in the White House, LDS missionaries will find an ever more hospitable climate in which to spread their soul-damning religion—especially overseas.

And the growth of the Mormon Church is already entirely out of control. Let me explain: the currently fourteen million member Mormon Church doubles in size about every 15 years, and has done so since the Second World War. Much of the growth occurs through the relentless efforts of their 60,000 missionaries, who are responsible for converting about 250,000 individuals a year. In fact, Mormons like to brag, “We baptize a Baptist church every week.”

Due to these staggering statistics, they are currently ranked seventh among all church groups in America, surpassing the Presbyterians, Episcopalians, and Lutheran Church (Missouri Synod). Indeed, the Mormons are playing for keeps and naive Evangelicals are playing right into their hands. Mormons have for some time attempted to shed their cult epithet, and with the assistance of Evangelicals like yourself they will succeed. With the most powerful man in the world as their chief ambassador, the Saints could achieve the coveted status of a major world religion, a standing that will likely never be reversed.

Rev. Falwell, those of us on the front lines of Mormon polemics feel betrayed by actions such as yours and implore you to reconsider your decision to invite Gov. Romney. I hope you will agree that in the long run promoting Gov. Romney will do more harm than good and that the destiny of lost souls outweighs even the welfare of this great nation.

Respectfully yours,
John Makujina, Ph. D.
