Advent: The Gentle Powerful Savior

It’s easy to forget that baby Jesus in Luke 2 is the same Jesus in Revelation 19, riding on his white horse with a sword ready to fight and destroy His enemies.

Written by Jordan Standridge | Friday, December 21, 2018

In Jesus we find an overwhelming reality. We find a person who deserves our worship for eternity but yet who would humble Himself and spend time in the womb of a woman He created for the sake of saving those who would put their faith in Him. He is both just and justifier; He is so powerful, and yet so gentle.

Isn’t it easy sometimes to lose sight about who Jesus really is? Especially around the Christmas season?

It’s easy to forget that baby Jesus in Luke 2is the same Jesus in Revelation 19, riding on his white horse with a sword ready to fight and destroy His enemies. The One who has the power to calm the storm and to feed the five thousand. The one with the power to create the world in six literal days and to command every knee to bow to Him in worship (Phil. 2:9).

And yet, there He is in Luke 2, gently resting in the manger, incapable of talking, walking, or feeding Himself.

The humility that Jesus showed in His condescension to earth is mind boggling, but the Jews should have been expecting it. In Isaiah 42:1-4, God, through the prophet Isaiah, says about Jesus,

“Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him, and he will bring justice to the nations. He will not shout or cry out, or raise his voice in the streets. A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out. In faithfulness he will bring forth justice; he will not falter or be discouraged till he establishes justice on earth. In his teaching the islands will put their hope.”

In Jesus we find an overwhelming reality. We find a person who deserves our worship for eternity but yet who would humble Himself and spend time in the womb of a woman He created for the sake of saving those who would put their faith in Him. He is both just and justifier; He is so powerful, and yet so gentle.
