A long way to come for a doctor’s appointment

Written by Wiley Smith | Sunday, August 15, 2010

Dr. Wiley Smith and his wife, Karon, serve with PCA’s Mission to the World as Medical Missionaries. Many will remember Dr. Smith from his work at the Medical Clinic in Corozal Province of Belize. Here is his most recent report.

Most of my patients live in or near Dalton, Georgia, where I care for medically indigent patients at no charge through Grace Medical Outreach. Transport is not a problem for them, since I visit them in their homes.

But recently two patients traveled over eight thousand miles to see me for a checkup. Tial and Annie are from a country in Asia where Christians suffer degrees of persecution, and where medical care is scarce for many due to poverty.

Tial is a pastor and leader for a growing organization of churches. He and his wife Annie came to the U.S. for a few weeks to visit friends and to study at a seminary. I had met them earlier this year in their native country, and found that they had chronic medical problems that needed ongoing attention. I was able to do tests and get help from specialists while they stayed with us in Dalton.

For many Christians around the world, medical care is hard to get. Both persecution and poverty present roadblocks. In our country, poverty and social isolation are likewise barriers. Medical missions, whether in this country or overseas, can play a big role in treating and preventing illnesses, enabling Christians to serve the Lord and their communities.

Here in Dalton, Grace Medical Outreach has 109 home visit patients enrolled. We are looking forward to trips with Mission to the World medical teams over the next year to Ukraine, Haiti and Tial and Annie’s home country. You can join our team by prayer and financial support, but we do also need medical and non-medical team members. Please see below for upcoming opportunities.

An overnight stay in Vienna on the way back is a bonus. Cost: $1200 excluding airfare. Contact Cheryl Erb at Mission to the World: [email protected].

Medical Mission Short-Term trip, Haiti, December 4-11

We’ll serve with Haitian pastors Esaie Etennae or Jean Paul to conduct a week of clinics for people affected by flood and earthquake disasters. Contact Cheryl Erb at Mission to the World, [email protected].

Please pray for medical missionaries to go, and the provision of finances and supplies to equip those that go. You can make tax deductible donations by check to Grace Medical Outreach Ministry, 2107 Threadmill Road, Dalton GA 30720.
