From these verses and many others, we learn that it is folly to trust in our own hearts or feelings. If we’re honest, we don’t really know what is best for us. That’s why we need God’s Word to point us toward the right actions and attitudes that bring the most glory to God and are for our neighbor’s good.

I’m one of a hundred million Star Wars fans out there, but there are a few things we all can learn from this epic saga.

The first thing to learn, though, is what not to do.

One of my favorite characters, Obi-Wan Kenobi, tells Luke Skywalker something that strikes a very familiar chord in our society: “You must do what you feel is right, of course.” I think most people would agree with this Jedi’s advice. If it feels good, then it is good. If we like it, it must be right.

But the Bible gives us at least a few reasons to doubt this poor recommendation. Here are five reasons why we shouldn’t listen to Obi-Wan when it comes to the Christian faith and our decisions in life.

1. “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?” (Jer. 17:9)
2. “The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advice.” (Prov. 12:15)
3. “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.” (Prov. 14:12)
4. “Whoever trusts in his own mind is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom will be delivered.” (Prov. 28:26)
5. “A fool gives full vent to his spirit, but a wise man quietly holds it back.” (Prov. 29:11)
