Walton Romefelt Kendall, a native of New Jersey, passed away on Monday night after a long battle with multiple myeloma, a cancer of the bone. Walt was 56 years old. He was diagnosed in the summer of 2010.
Walt was a Pastor in the PCA for over 26 years. He completed undergraduate work at University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 1977 and earned both the MAR and MDiv degrees at Westminster Seminary, Philadelphia in 1983, the same year he married Robin Strassner Kendall in Charlotte, NC. Immediately after completing seminary he obtained a Master’s Degree in Culture from Bowling Green State in Ohio in 1984. In 2009, he completed his work and received a DMin from Covenant Seminary in St. Louis.
Walt was ordained by Central Carolina Presbytery of the PCA in 1985 and began his service that year as the organizing pastor as a church planter in Greensboro, NC, leaving that work four years later to become Assistant Pastor at Grace PCA in Ocala, Florida. From there he moved to the Lakemont PCA in August, Georgia where he served as both Assistant and Associate Pastor working with Senior Pastor John Jagoditch, who interestingly had served at Ocala before Walt’s arrival.
In 2001, Walt and his family moved to Sumter, SC to take the position as Senior Pastor of the Westminster PCA following a long pastorate by John Ropp, Jr. Walt was still serving at Westminster when at the time of his sickness and death.
Survivors include his wife Robin; two married sons with Covenant College backgrounds. Will serves as a regional technical advisor with The Chalmers Center for Economic Development in Togo, West Africa, and Michael who lives in Chattanooga, works at River City Industrial and attends New City Fellowship East Lake where he assists with worship music; and daughter Sarabeth of Sumter, who is still in high school. Also surviving are two brothers and two sisters.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 AM Thursday at Westminster Presbyterian Church with Rev. Stuart Mizelle and Rev. Dr. John Wade Long, Jr. officiating. The family will receive friends at the Church Fellowship Hall following the memorial service at the church.
