In Hebrews: The Sufficiency of the Savior, John Stevenson provides an easy-reading commentary that bridges the gap between the recipients of the first century and today’s twenty first century readers.
Using a variety of charts and illustrations that bring to light the meaning of the text, he takes the technical details of exegesis and sets them forth in an easy-to-understand presentation that has as its focus, not only the meaning of the text, but its application to 21st century believers. His explanations, illustrations, and applications translate easily into the pulpit or to the Bible study group.
Particularly striking is his treatment of Hebrews 6 and 10 where, instead of focusing on what these passage do not say, he faces these difficult verses head-on, calling on the context to bring us to a surprising but inevitable conclusion. Although knowledge of Greek is not essential to reading and benefitting from this commentary, Dr. Stevenson does deal with the Greek text and brings to light those points that help our understanding.
The epistle to the Hebrews is addressed to those who are going through difficult times and who are beginning to question their spiritual convictions. What good is religion when the world is falling down around your ears? Isn’t there something better out there? The answer is that there is One who is sufficient for every season. When you look at the best of what religion has to offer, you find that Jesus is better.
