Redeemer Presbyterian Church (PCA) marks its 15th anniversary this month and is celebrating its efforts to build a ministry in downtown Athens as well as “plant” new churches, said Redeemer Pastor Hal Farnsworth.
“We’ve seen the start of Downtown Ministries youth programs and sports programs in Athens, and have started a second church, Resurrection Presbyterian Church, on the Eastside,” Farnsworth said.
Last fall about 100 Redeemer members, led by minister Don Aldin, began meeting at Gaines School Elementary School, creating Redeemer’s first effort at launching new churches, Farnsworth said.
“Several years ago, we decided we didn’t want Redeemer to get any bigger than 400 or 500 members,” Farnsworth said. “But we did want to plant new churches. One of our goals is to continue to start churches.”
To that end, Redeemer identifies male church members who are ordained or in the seminary and train them in the theology and the philosophy of the church’s ministry, Farnsworth said.
