Mr. Carrell, 70, a practicing attorney, is a ruling elder in the Stony Point Reformed Presbyterian Church in Richmond, Va.
At its opening session on Tuesday, June 7, 2011, the 39th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in America elected RE Daniel Carrell as Moderator. The PCA General Assembly is holding its annual meeting in the Virginia Beach Convention Center in Virginia Beach, Va., through June 10.
Mr. Carrell, 70, a practicing attorney, is a ruling elder in the Stony Point Reformed Presbyterian Church in Richmond, Va. He was nominated by Ruling E. J. Nusbaum of Colorado.
Also nominated was E. C. Burnett III, a ruling elder in the Mount Calvary Presbyterian Church in Roebuck, S.C. He was nominated by Ruling Elder Sam Duncan of Mississippi.
A native of Louisville, Ky., Mr. Carrell received his bachelor’s degree from Davidson College in Davidson, N.C., and his J.D. from Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif. He also studied two times at Oxford University, receiving a B.A. in 1965, and a M.A. in 1969, this time as a Rhodes Scholar.
Mr. Carrell served in the United States Army from 1968-1971. Attaining the rank of Captain he served as an Assistant Professor of Social Sciences at U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y.
His legal career has spanned 40 years, serving in private practice with a number of firms. At present he is the founder and principal in Carrell Blanton Garrett & Van Horn in Richmond, Va. His practice has focused on civil litigation, mediation, and other forms of dispute resolution; commercial matters, including business counseling and contract negotiations; and administrative law, including legal representation before various state agencies. He has served as a Hearing Officer for the Commonwealth of Virginia from 2000-2011, presiding over administrative appeals within state agencies.
Mr. Carrell has served the Presbyterian Church in America in a number of capacities: as a ruling elder at Stony Point Reformed Presbyterian Church; in the James River Presbytery, serving on a number of committees as well as one term as Moderator; and on the General Assembly level, Mr. Carrell has served on the Committee on Constitutional Business; the Bills & Overtures Committee, and is presently a member of the PCA’s Standing Judicial Commission.
Mr. Carrell and his wife, Janis, have two daughters, Molly and Courtney, and one grandchild.
