1860s-style worship service planned at Trinity Free Presbyterian Church in Decatur, Alabama and Glasgow Reformed Presbyterian in Bear, Deleware remembers fallen soldiers with thousands of flags
From the Decatur (AL) Daily
On Sunday morning, soldiers clad in Union blue and Confederate gray uniforms will gather to worship. As part of the Battle for Decatur’s September Skirmish, Civil War re-enactors will host an 1860s-style church service.
The 10 a.m. service at the Point Mallard Prayer Chapel is open to the public and will include singing and a sermon.
“We will sing hymns that the Confederate soldiers would have sung during war; we don’t have access to the Union hymns,” said the Rev. Myron Mooney, leader of Trinity Free Presbyterian Church. (Editor’s Note: Trinity FPC is a member denomination in the relatively small denomination known as the Free Presbyterian Church of North America.)
The service will also include string and woodwind accompaniment and a message from the 1860s, Mooney said.
The re-enactors will distribute copies of tracts given to the Union and Confederate troops during the war.

More than 6,000 American flags will be on display, along Route 896, outside Glasgow Reformed Presbyterian Church to remember all of the American soldiers killed in the war on terror since 9/11.
The display is part of the effort of MARKINC ministries, headed up by the church’s Senior Pastor Chuck Betters.
“The sacrifices of each and every one of these brave American citizens will be remembered,” says Betters. “Each one of these flags is here, along one of Delaware’s busiest roads, to serve as a reminder that freedom from terror comes at a cost.”
