Don’t let communion be commonplace. Don’t let yourself become bored with it. The Lord’s Supper is not an invention of man. It is Jesus’ idea. Let this glorious meal be a reminder of your sin and of what God has done to save you from that sin. Let it drive you to long for the coming of the Lord. As you take communion, may you take it in remembrance of Him.
Each week our church gets a visual reminder of the gospel. We take the bread and the cup, and we eat and drink in remembrance of Christ. Weekly communion has been a staple of our church liturgy from the beginning, and it has been one of the most impactful parts of our service. I’ve heard people say that taking the Lord’s Supper weekly can make us grow dull to the experience, but over the years, my love for the Lord’s Supper has not diminished, but increased. Our pastors love to say that this is a time for faith-filled remembrance. Yes! I want to tell you a few benefits of weekly communion.
We Are Reminded of Our Sin
In the Lord’s Supper, each participant is to “examine himself” (1 Cor 11:28). We are to ask the question, “Does my life make sense in light of the gospel?” We don’t want to come to the table with unconfessed sin. We want to rightly judge ourselves to take seriously the warning that the person who fails to do this, “eats and drinks judgement on himself” (1 Cor 11:29). When we see the bread and the cup, we are reminded what our sin cost. It cost the Son of God His body and His blood.
