Mr. Mindeman joined the Covenant community as director of library services in 2002, and has served with faithful excellence since that time. Under the guidance and direction of Mr. Mindeman, Covenant’s Kresge Memorial Library became the eleventh library in the world to go live with the Online Computer Library Center’s cloud-based integrated operating system, WorldShare Management Services, in spring 2011.
Professor George “Tad” Mindeman (1954-2015), director of library services at Covenant College, passed away suddenly as the result of an apparent heart attack on the evening of October 20, 2015. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Mindeman, and their children: Nathan, Liesl, Hannah, Andrew, Samuel, and Matthew.
Mr. Mindeman’s career in library services began in 1978, when he served as a technical services librarian for the Historical Foundation of the Presbyterian & Reformed Churches. He later served as a librarian at Reformed Theological Seminary, Jackson; library director at the International School of Theology; and director of library services at John Brown University, among others.
The new operating system and subsequent new discovery tool search engine provided Covenant’s community with the very best library resource available.
Mr. Mindeman was a member of many professional organizations and presented papers on assessment and cloud-based library systems for a number of those organizations, sharing his experience in library services with others in his field. He served as a consultant for other libraries and consistently served on committees at Covenant College.
Most recently, in addition to his daily work, Mr. Mindeman successfully chaired the topic selection committee for Covenant’s newest quality enhancement plan, a critical element in the reaffirmation of regional accreditation through SACS-COC.
The Covenant community will miss his leadership of the library and his advocacy for excellence at the College.
“Under the leadership of Tad Mindeman, Covenant College’s library has been transformed into a vibrant hub on our campus,” said Dr. Jeff Hall, vice president for academic affairs. “His ability to cast a vision and attend to details simultaneously resulted in a library with practices that faithfully serve the College mission and the larger community of higher education. The fruits of his labor will be enjoyed for years to come.”
