At a meeting on September 20, 2009, the congregation of Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church voted to keep its pastor, the Rev. Tullian Tchividjian by a vote of 940 – 422. The meeting was held as a result of a petition submitted to the Session (the church elder board) by around 400 members requesting that the congregation vote on whether to “dissolve the pastoral relationship” between Tchividjian and Coral Ridge.
Tchividjian was called as pastor in March and preached his first sermon at Coral Ridge on Easter. He is the second pastor of the church, following the founding pastor, Dr. D. James Kennedy, who served for 46 years.
The Session adjusted the regular morning worship service time so the congregation meeting could be held at 11: a.m. Dr. L. Roy Taylor, Stated Clerk of the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA), moderated the meeting at the request of the Session.
