After completing a spring tour through the southeastern U.S., the choir of Cono Christian School will perform its Home Concert at Bible Presbyterian Church (PCA), located two miles north of Walker, Iowa, on Sunday, April 18 at 6 p.m. The public is invited.
This is one of seven local region concerts to wrap up the 2009-10 season.
All students in grades 7-12 join the choir during the first semester of each year. During Spring Break, a group of 40 members of the choir performs around the United States.
The choir sings in four-part harmony. The choir’s repertoire includes standard choral anthems, but also psalms, hymns, and gospel. They sing both accompanied and unaccompanied. The choir is directed by Andrew Belz, and assisted by Lynn Jahl. It begins performing in the fall and continues to do so throughout the school year, including visits to retirement homes and to local churches. In its history, the Cono Choir has sung at such places as before the Iowa legislature, the Moody Church in Chicago, Coral Ridge Presbyterian in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., the Ligonier National Conference in Orlando, Fla., and countless church and civic groups.
The Cono Choir has been performing since the school began in 1951. The school was founded by a Bible Presbyterian Church (later part of the Reformed Presbyterian Church, Evangelical Synod) pastor, Max Belz. Max’s commitment to Christian Education, as well as a desire to provide a school for missionary kids to reintegrate to U. S. culture during high school years, let do the founding of Cono, which also serves as a day school for area families seeking Christian education.
Readers of World Magazine might recognize the surname, Belz. Founder of the magazine, Joel Belz, is Max’s son.
The school will be hosting its next reunion on July 24.
