Dressing Down For Church
Shouldn’t church be the most important event of the week for everybody, at least as important as a wedding or other celebration?
Maybe dressing down is effective outreach for audiences unaccustomed to church formality. But most in these same audiences probably still dress up for weddings, funerals, graduations and events they regard as significant. Evidently worship no longer counts as that significant to merit respectful dress. It once was a redeeming quality for traditional once Mainline Protestant... Continue Reading
Federal Judge Calls Obamacare “Totally Ineffective” While Striking Down Contraception Mandate
Cogan forcefully rejected three key Obama defenses of the mandate
The contraception mandate “directly compels plaintiffs, through the threat of onerous penalties, to undertake actions that their religion forbids,” Cogan wrote. “There is no way that a court can, or should, determine that a coerced violation of conscience is of insufficient quantum to merit constitutional protection.” Yesterday, Judge Brian Cogan of the United States... Ted Haggard on How Not to Repent
Haggard used the recent suicide of another megachurch pastor’s son, Isaac Hunter, to continue his attempts at resurrecting his name, reputation, and ministry.
So why highlight it? First, because it will help us to spot these characteristics when dealing with others who have fallen into public sin and scandal. Sadly, there are predictable patterns to these things that we’d do well to acquaint ourselves with so that we are not duped. And second, because we can use it... Continue Reading
Harold Camping, Radio Host Who Predicted World’s End, Dies At 92
Camping died Sunday evening; he had fallen at his home on Nov. 30 and had been in weak health due to a stroke since 2011
Camping was once well-regarded in among evangelicals, both for his encyclopedic knowledge of Scripture and his radio network. But in the late 1980s, when he began teaching that churches had strayed from the Bible embracing a false doctrine, he lost much previous support. He also discouraged his listeners from joining a church, saying modern churches... Continue Reading
Former Gay Activist Marries Woman; Addresses Critics Who Condemn His New Heterosexual Lifestyle
Ex-gay activist Michael Glatze penned an open letter about his recent heterosexual marriage addressed to "angry homosexuals" who have criticized him for leaving his past and finding God
“We are not a couple of people who are interested, per se, in being political pawns. I have never called myself an ‘ex-gay,’ though other people have called me that. But, then again, people have called me a lot of things, on account of the fact that I left homosexuality a few years back and... Continue Reading
The First Reformed Website on the Block
Monergism.com was the jackpot for many of my questions
When we encountered God’s sovereignty and outworking of salvation in our Scripture reading, we had no systematic teaching that informed us of the doctrines of grace. We had no covenantal understanding of God’s promises. Thankfully, we did have a firm grip on the inerrancy of Scripture, and though I didn’t have a theological term for... Continue Reading
Things Christians Struggle With, Part 4: Health
One couple's journey in dealing with chronic illness.
No disrespect to doctors, but sometimes people heave health issues that will not be solved by prescription pills. Sometimes, people have to seek alternative methods to determine and then cure what ails them (and yes, great care and discernment are needed here), which is what we eventually did. And sometimes, the Lord in His mysterious... Continue Reading

Taking Credit, Deflecting Blame
Controversy surrounding megachurch pastor Mark Driscoll shines light on practices in Christian publishing industry
“It is a shame that a Christian publisher would cite ‘market standards’ when there are biblical standards to go by,” Throckmorton said. “Christian publishers should aspire to more than mere industry standards.” At least one Christian publisher said Driscoll’s books do not even rise to that low bar. Accusations of plagiarism surrounding Seattle megachurch... Continue Reading
