Louisiana Supreme Court Dismisses Louisiana College Suit
A 9-year-old lawsuit alleging violations of academic freedom at a Baptist school has ended with a decision that secular courts cannot decide which side is right in a dispute involving church doctrine.
The 9th Judicial District Court dismissed the case in March 2012, saying issues involved “will necessarily turn upon competing interpretations of religion, thus resulting in the court becoming entangled in an ecclesiastical dispute.” The 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals upheld that ruling in November 2013, finding the dispute “centers on the nature of Baptist theology... PCUSA’s Young Adult Web Site Is A Disappointment: No God, No Gospel
There are plenty of resources on the site, but none that explicitly relate to things like belief, faith, the Gospel, discipleship or spiritual formation
“I turned to What’s Next What’s Now hoping to find some resources to help post-college Christians understand and apply their faith to the stage of life they occupy. After all, the Reformed tradition has been a thought and practice leader in understanding and engaging culture with the Gospel. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. There are plenty... Continue Reading
Major Ministry Kicked Out of Evangelical Alliance UK Over Homosexuality Stance
EAUK cites irreconcilable differences with Steve Chalke's Oasis Trust
“While the Oasis board says it has “no corporate view on this matter,” Steve Chalke shocked British evangelicals by coming out in favor of same-sex relationships last year. He announced his belief that monogamous same-sex relationships are not sinful and that churches should support them in the February 2013 issue of Christianity magazine.” Oasis... Continue Reading
The Legacy I Want to Leave
A new and focused passion to help people really see the riches of God’s word for themselves
Knowing that God himself has spoken fully and inerrantly in the Bible leads us to look and look and look — undistractingly, assiduously, persistently, prayerfully, desperately — until we see, and until our hearts burn. As Martin Luther said, we beat on the text with our eyes and our mind and our heart and our... Continue Reading
More Questions Than Answers On Protestantism’s Future?
Unity is much to be desired. But two questions remain: What does this unity look like? And how do we get there?
Discussions of church unity are so often an example of incontestably admirable aspirations combined with a complete lack of practical suggestions. Discussions of the future of Protestantism can tend that way too unless we ask the basic pragmatic questions of what we want to achieve and what steps we must take to achieve it. ... Continue Reading
My Story in the White Ghetto
Excerpt from the new book ‘Aliens in the Promised Land.’ Why minority leadership is overlooked in White Christian churches and institutions.
This book is an attempt to humbly bring an issue that is important to minorities who are within and adjacent to evangelicalism to the attention of those committed to pressing the claims of Christ everywhere in life. This volume is a collection of stories and recommendations from Asian, black, and Hispanic leaders from multiple denominations,... Continue Reading
Face Off: Para-Church Youth Ministry Cannot Replace the Local Church
Contrasting opinions on the role of para-church ministries as compared to the local church
I have become increasingly aware of my generation’s low-committal, take-it-or-leave-it approach to the local church and have wondered about the actual biblical basis for many of these para church groups that functionally usurp the ministry, worship, and fellowship of the local church. I benefited from several para-church groups as a teenager, and I’m grateful... Continue Reading
Trinity Western Blasts N.S., Ontario Law Societies
Law societies in Nova Scotia and Ontario sent a "chilling message" about religious freedom in Canada by restricting or rejecting accreditation for Trinity Western’s proposed law school
In that case, the British Columbia College of Teachers rejected Trinity’s teaching degrees because students had to sign an agreement not to engage in homosexuality. The Supreme Court of Canada said the college was wrong to reject Trinity on the basis of discrimination. The university will press ahead with plans for Canada’s only faith-based law school.... ‘Expository Preaching’ – Time for Caution
Clarifying the term ‘expository’ as a model of preaching
Preaching needs to be much more than an agency of instruction. It needs to strike, awaken, and arouse men and women so that they themselves become bright Christians and daily students of Scripture. If the preacher conceives his work primarily in terms of giving instruction, rather than of giving stimulus, the sermon, in most hands,... Continue Reading
Special Needs Children in God’s Kingdom: From the Sidewalk Snapshot to the Big Picture
The Scripture tells us that we are all broken although not all in the same way
But God has placed this broken momma and this broken boy and their broken little family in the midst of a bigger broken, yet redeemed family, God’s Church. More specifically, God had placed them in their local church body. Why should our local church body care about my little boy with his special needs? Well,... Continue Reading
