10 Reasons I’m Thankful for the Presbyterian Church in America
The PCA ain’t heaven on earth–never has been, never will be. But as a newcomer to the PCA and relative outsider, I see much to be thankful for.
Standards. Although there are differences regarding certain articles in the Westminster Standards, I’ve found that nearly everyone I know in the PCA takes them very seriously. The only thing worse than a denomination always arguing about theology is a denomination that never argues about theology. I’ve never attended the PCA General Assembly, but this... Continue Reading

The PCA GA: What is it?
An overview of the PCA's General Assembly
The PCA GA is the annual denominational meeting for the Presbyterian Church in America. The PCA is the second-largest Presbyterian denomination in the United States, though it is only about one-sixth the size of the largest: the Presbyterian Church (USA). Convention In large part, PCA GA is a convention, much like a business or academic... Continue Reading
Overture 3 to the PCA GA
Overture 3 has to do with the wording of one of the vows made by the parents at a baptism of a child.
It does not seem to me that we should reject something in our standards simply because the Baptists use similar language. I can’t imagine any self-respecting Baptist agreeing to the theology of BCO 56. I am perfectly content with the language as it is. The overture does not offer any biblical argumentation as to why... Overture 1 to the General Assembly of the PCA
“Amend BCO 15-1 and 15-3 to give Presbyteries the Additional Option of 3 Appointing a Judicial Commission Whose Decision Would Be Final”
However, one problem remains: the commission that is given full power to render the final verdict would still not be under a final approval or disapproval by the presbytery. It is far more difficult to get a decision overturned by means of a complaint (when, by the time the complaint is heard, most of the... Continue Reading
Changes at Metokos Ministries, Church Revitalization
At next week’s gathering, June 8-12, in Chattanooga, Metokos Ministries will have a booth, and Don and I will be there to spread the word about church revitalization.
Next week I will attend the PCA General Assembly. I will not be a delegate, but I will be an exhibitor for Metokos Ministries, a church revitalization ministry begun by my seminary classmate, Don Clements, over a decade ago. In that decade, he has served over 100 churches. Don has mentored me to become the Executive... Continue Reading
Overture 7 from New Hope PCA, Fairfax, VA
Amend BCO 35-1.to Require Church Officers to Testify
My own sense is that this overture (with the additional proviso) would be a wise addition to the BCO. Anyone who has ever been involved in a church judicial case (at least in the PCA context) probably knows the frustration of dealing with a man who essentially “pleads the 5th.” The two-fold consideration brought by... Overture 8 at the PCA General Assembly: On TEs, REs, and Deacons Without Call
This overture seeks to change the BCO so that ministers who remain without a ministry call for three years the presbytery may divest him of office
As the BCO currently reads, a presbytery needs a two-thirds vote to divest a man who is without call for an extended period. This overture seeks to change the BCO so that ministers without call need to report to presbytery annually. If a man remains without call for three years, the presbytery shall divest him... Overtures 2 and 9 to the PCA General Assembly
North Texas Presbytery and the Tennessee Valley Presbytery have both overtured the PCA GA to establish a study committee regarding the Sabbath.
In terms of granting the exception, it seems clear to me that different presbyteries have a widely differing spread on this issue. Some presbyteries have almost all of their guys taking this exception. Others have almost no one taking the exception. My question is a simple one: why do these presbyteries think that our current... Gospel Reformation Network Hosting Luncheon at PCA General Assembly
The Gospel Reformation Network is hosting its annual luncheon at the PCA General Assembly in Chattanooga on June 10, 2015
Over the last three years the Gospel Reformation Network (GRN) has sought to engage the ministers, churches, and agencies of the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) in a conversation on the doctrine of sanctification–– a doctrine which is foundational to our understanding of the gospel and the Christian life. The Gospel Reformation Network (GRN)... Continue Reading
