Tipping Point?
Voters’ core beliefs have shifted massively—and political efforts won’t shift them back
“What can I do over the next several years to change the worldview of a few people around me? How can I influence a few ‘takers’ I know to become ‘makers’ and ‘enablers’? How can I persuade them to be ‘wagon pullers’ instead of ‘wagon riders’?”
‘He’s Just Not a Spiritual Leader,’ and Other Christian Dating Myths
I've seen otherwise strong couples fall apart because the woman held an unfair spiritual standard for the man.
I started wondering about all the godly men who may have other spiritual gifts—just not the ones traditionally considered “male” spiritual gifts. For example, what about men who have the gift of mercy or hospitality or service or encouragement, and who are full of the fruits of the Spirit? Do we devalue them simply because they’re not at the helm or out in front but rather operating alongside their partner?
The Struggle for Lincoln’s Soul
Was Abraham Lincoln a Christian? A look at the evidence.
In Washington, especially after the death of his son, Lincoln regularly attended New York Avenue Presbyterian Church. Sometimes he even came to the midweek prayer service but remained in a side room out of view of the congregation. (Editor’s Note: D. James Kennedy taught that Lincoln privately made a profession of faith and joined NYAPC... Continue Reading
The Counterintuitive Calvin
The "Institutes" are, I think, the greatest, deepest, and most extensive treatment of the grace of God I have ever read
When Calvin comes to his well-known doctrine of predestination, it is important to see where he places it. He does not deal with the doctrine under Book 1 where he treats God, or even Book 2 where he addresses sin and Christ. He waits until Book 3, which is about "How We Receive the Grace of Christ" through the Holy Spirit. Calvin insists that the opposite of the doctrine of predestination is not the idea of free will but the teaching that we are saved by our good works.
Sex, Truth, and Erasing the Tapes
Our society of course takes the wrong lessons from the Gospel
It is the pastor's job to help his church leadership deal with sexual sin in a loving, healing, restorative, yet morally uncompromising way. If this means a young pregnant woman must come before the Elders, and the young man who sinned as well, and confess and repent, then it must be done. If it means the Elders must pronounce forgiveness to them, it must be done.
Advice for Christians Who are Considering Moving to a New City
Remember, wherever you go, there YOU are. You bring the problems and the discontent with you.
If there are no good churches in an area, DON’T MOVE THERE. Do not kid yourself you can drive and fellowship comfortably at a church 1.5+ hours away; that you’ll just “worship at home;” that you’ll start a church plant or that “things will work out.” This is the equivalent of marrying the unbeliever because you’re sure you can convert him.
Atheist group sues IRS over churches endorsing politics
Claim: Not enforcing the law is a violation of the establishment clause of the First Amendment and a violation of equal protection rights
A manager in the IRS’s Mid-Atlantic region said in October that the agency had suspended audits of churches suspected of breaching federal restrictions on political activity. A 2009 federal court ruling required the IRS to clarify which high-ranking official could authorize audits over the tax code’s political rules. The IRS has yet to do so.... Continue Reading
SC Episcopal Bishop tells parishes they free to choose their own ecclesiastical future
Presiding Bishop of the U.S. Episcopal Church will form 'rebel diocese'
Another orthodox Anglican Bishop raised the specter of (Presiding Bishop) going into Federal court since there is a plurality of jurisdictions (NY vs. SC) and an amount at stake of more than $75,000. By going into federal court, she bypasses entirely the state Supreme Court Dennis Canon ruling and gets a new bite at the apple. While (the bishop) cannot get her hands on parishes because the Dennis Canon has been ruled out of court, she could go for the diocese's downtown headquarters.
After Seeing Lincoln, I Wanted to Sit in Stunned, Reflective Silence
After seeing Schindler’s List and after seeing Lincoln, I hated the evil in the world. I marveled at the courage of people who stand up for good
I know people respond differently to art and I’m sure this will be true of Lincoln. (9% of Rotten Tomatoes critics have given it a “rotten” review, for reasons I cannot fathom.) But, for me, watching this film was not just enjoyable and engaging, but also stunning and transformational.
Two preaching giants and the ‘betrayal’ that tore them apart
Andy Stanley became one of nation's biggest pastors after being labeled a traitor by his father, Charles
Andy says it was after that exchange that he started popping up in his father's sermons, not as the heir apparent, but as the Old Testament villain, Absalom. Absalom was the charismatic but treacherous son of David who tried to snatch his father's kingdom away from him through war. "My dad at the time fashioned me as an Absalom who had rebelled against him," Andy says. But Andy himself felt betrayed.
