As congregations historically affiliated with the Presbyterian Church USA and the Episcopal Church USA seek to realign with more conservative branches of their denominational families, court battles over property continue across the country.

Whilst in the great scheme of things what I am about to write about is not of the same scale as some of the much deeper and wider injustices in our society and world today, nonetheless what is going on is indicative of a deep malaise within the church in Scotland in general and the Church of Scotland in particular.

In October 2009 Rev. McNeill, then a pastor at Central Presbyterian Church at Newark (NJ) Presbytery, went to Massachusetts where she married her partner in a ceremony held at an Episcopal Church which was overseen by clergy from The Episcopal Church and the United Church of Christ.

The Presbytery of Glasgow says it will "take all necessary steps to recover all property and assets, including the church and manse buildings, and all monies belonging to the Church of Scotland congregation of St George's Tron". I get more pushback from men who are well-established in the church than I do from women. Women sense the need. Women see their husbands bored. They see their sons dropping out. Throughout the ordeal, no formal charges were filed against the Crossroads trio, no opportunities to face accusers, no chance to offer a rebuttal or cross examine witnesses, no presentation of evidence, no due process. Milwaukee’s administrative commission simply barreled into Crossroads, declared itself to be prosecutor, jury and judge, and left the rule of law in shambles.

This overture was filed as early as possible to give the GA Administrative Committee and the Cooperative Ministries Committee opportunity to review and comment, if they wished. After receiving feedback, our Presbytery is willing to consider revising and resubmitting prior to the 2013 overtures deadline.

At the end of the day, people need to see that God’s truth as well as his grace and love are more than theoretical beliefs. God is true and his Son Jesus Christ is mighty to save. Churches that show Jesus Christ is real will always attract people of all ages.

By any criteria, it has become one of the most disastrous and devastating ecclesiastical battles since the formation of the Anglican Mission in the Americas (AMIA) and the later birth of the Anglican Church in North America (ACNA).
