What’s In a Denominational Name?
Today, neither the Orthodox Presbyterian Church nor the Presbyterian Church in America bear their first chosen names.
Ultimately though, the last names chosen for the OPC and the PCA are probably better than their first. And the tortuous church-naming process the two bodies endured offers a warning to any would-be splitters or leavers: choosing (and keeping) a new denominational name may be harder than anyone expects. And think of all the stationery... Continue Reading
The Courage To Be Presbyterian
With hearts full of love for God and each other, let’s seek the peace and holiness of the church, and show the courage of our Presbyterian convictions.
The temptation for the church to broker God’s truth for the sake of ecclesiastical unity and cultural acceptance is a perennial one. The evangelical world has already made that deal. It’s disgraceful. But we must not! My fellow elders in the Presbyterian Church in America, we must firmly resist the temptation to negotiate biblical fidelity... Continue Reading
Lessons Learned? Allegations at the OPC General Assembly
Setting the record straight and highlighting for the OPC that what they need now, more than ever, is to double down on following their Presbyterian principles.
The major lesson from this assembly on this matter is that we need to double down on our Presbyterian principles. Witnesses and evidence with biblical process for those who are guilty and vindication for those who have been falsely charged. This has always been the Presbyterian way and is doubly necessary in the negative world.... Continue Reading
Paper Tiger PCA?
Reflecting on the latest round of overtures and their respective backgrounds, it may be that the PCA may be something of a paper tiger.
My use of “paper tiger” when describing the PCA is slightly different than the standard definition. There are many good things going on in the PCA that profitable for gospel ministry that are certainly not façades. When I say the PCA may be a paper tiger, I mean that the PCA is strong on paper... Why the PCA Needs a Statute of Limitation – Reasons to Vote Against Amending BCO 32-20
Reasons for PCA Presbyteries to vote NO on amending BCO 32-20, the statute of limitations provision.
I am convinced that removing the present wording of the statute of limitations in BCO 32-20 will lead to other serious problems and unintended consequences. The proposed amendment will potentially open up members to harassment by the courts; it will allow the shepherding from elders to become lax; it will allow courts to settle for... Continue Reading
Christian Reformed Church Brings LGBT Stance Into Faith Statement
The Christian Reformed Church Synod voted to codify its opposition to homosexual sex by elevating it to the status of confession, or declaration of faith.
The vote, after two long days of debate, approves a list of what the denomination calls sexual immorality it won’t tolerate, including “adultery, premarital sex, extra-marital sex, polyamory, pornography, and homosexual sex.” “The church must warn its members that those who refuse to repent of these sins—as well as of idolatry, greed, and other such... CRC Synod Tells Grand Rapids Church to End Term of LGBTQ Deacon
Christian Reformed Church Synod told Neland Avenue CRC in Grand Rapids to end the term of a deacon who is in a LGBTQ marriage.
The vote to “affirm that unchastity in the Heidelberg Catechism encompasses adultery, premarital sex, extra-marital sex, polyamory, pornography and homosexual sex, all of which violate the seventh commandment,” passed 123 to 53, with two voting to abstain. Delegates voted to not add a footnote to Q&A 108 of the Heidelberg Catechism, a confession of faith... Continue Reading
Missouri Presbytery Reports on Second Hearing Regarding Revoice Conference
The PCA’s Missouri Presbytery held a second hearing concerning its actions regarding Memorial Presbyterian Church’s involvement with the Revoice conference it hosted in 2018.
As part of MOP’s responsibility “to make clear to the broader Church the errors that were identified in Presbytery’s various investigations” — and the steps it is taking “to fulfill its responsibilities to protect the peace and purity of the broader Church . . . in light of these errors,” … the following documents are... Southern Baptists Shouldn’t Write Blank Checks For SBC Leaders On Sexual Abuse
Southern Baptist messengers should not give any blank-check authority to solve the fundamental issue of sexual allegations away from churches in a back room.
Last year, messengers to the 2021 Southern Baptist Convention authorized an internal investigation of the convention’s Executive Committee (EC). The motion the convention adopted created a task force and directed the president to name sex abuse experts who would hire and oversee an outside, independent expert to investigate “any allegations of abuse, mishandling of abuse,... The Standing Judicial Commission Just Violated the PCA Constitution and Standards—Again.
What rights do PCA members have to present their cases before the church courts?
The Bible I read gives a strong impression that the King and Head of the Church looks none too kindly on this kind of brazen rebellion—especially when perpetrated by those who claim to be His shepherds. “It belongs to His Majesty,” reads the BCO Preface, “from His throne of glory to rule and teach the...
