What the Church Really Believes about Sanctification
Perhaps some Nehemiahs and Daniels among us can start confessing these dastardly assumptions on behalf of us all
An elder from a fine church asked what I did. I told him that I was a Christian counselor. “Why would Christians need counseling?” he asked. I didn’t quite know what to say, but that was okay because he was not really asking a question. He was making a statement, and his statement says a lot
Swimming the Tiber?
To move to Rome is not only to give up justification and, thus, assurance— even more so, it is to give up Christ.
In the end, our controversy with Rome is important because Christ is important. Christ alone—not He and Mary (LG 62)—intercedes between us and the Father; Christ alone—not the pope (LG 22)—is the head of the church and, thus, the supreme judge of our consciences; Christ alone—not pagan “dictates of conscience” (LG 16)—must be the object of faith for salvation; and Christ’s righteousness alone—not ours (LG 40)—is the only hope we have for standing before a God who is both just and the Justifier of the wicked.
A Third Important PCUSA General Assembly Permanent Judicial Decision
Larson et al v. Presbytery of Los Ranchos
This Commission determines, therefore, that by directing the notification specifically to those who would potentially seek admission into Presbytery, the Resolution would have the practical effect of discouraging those seeking ordination or membership prior to the required case by case evaluation or examination. In so doing, Presbytery exceeded its authority and duty…
The Two Kingdoms Doctrine, Part Three: The Teaching of Scripture
The expression of Christ's universal lordship is explained not in terms of social or political power but in terms of the proclamation of the truth
For Calvin, the two kingdoms doctrine was a way of explaining why believers are called to live in the hope of the coming kingdom in such a way as not to over-anticipate its transformation of the present age. He continually reminded Christians of the passing and temporary nature of all things outside of Christ, including the social and political order,
Tipping Point?
Voters’ core beliefs have shifted massively—and political efforts won’t shift them back
“What can I do over the next several years to change the worldview of a few people around me? How can I influence a few ‘takers’ I know to become ‘makers’ and ‘enablers’? How can I persuade them to be ‘wagon pullers’ instead of ‘wagon riders’?”
Court rejects Hobby Lobby’s challenge to contraceptive mandate
Kyle Duncan, general counsel for the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, said Monday's ruling will be appealed.
Hobby Lobby faces a January 1 deadline to comply with the mandate to provide all FDA-approved contraceptives. Failure to do so would entail a penalty of up to $1.3 million per day.
‘He’s Just Not a Spiritual Leader,’ and Other Christian Dating Myths
I've seen otherwise strong couples fall apart because the woman held an unfair spiritual standard for the man.
I started wondering about all the godly men who may have other spiritual gifts—just not the ones traditionally considered “male” spiritual gifts. For example, what about men who have the gift of mercy or hospitality or service or encouragement, and who are full of the fruits of the Spirit? Do we devalue them simply because they’re not at the helm or out in front but rather operating alongside their partner?
The Struggle for Lincoln’s Soul
Was Abraham Lincoln a Christian? A look at the evidence.
In Washington, especially after the death of his son, Lincoln regularly attended New York Avenue Presbyterian Church. Sometimes he even came to the midweek prayer service but remained in a side room out of view of the congregation. (Editor’s Note: D. James Kennedy taught that Lincoln privately made a profession of faith and joined NYAPC... Continue Reading
5 Things We Learned from Franklin Graham
“Maybe he will have to bring this country down economically before we will turn our hearts back to God, I don’t know.”
Graham told a story about his father speaking at a 2000 news conference with George W. Bush in Jacksonville, Florida, on the Sunday before Election Day. That year, after a protracted recount, Florida wound up determining the election’s outcome for Bush. “Now don’t you think that was worth some votes in Florida,” Graham asked, referring to his dad’s appearance with Bush
The Counterintuitive Calvin
The "Institutes" are, I think, the greatest, deepest, and most extensive treatment of the grace of God I have ever read
When Calvin comes to his well-known doctrine of predestination, it is important to see where he places it. He does not deal with the doctrine under Book 1 where he treats God, or even Book 2 where he addresses sin and Christ. He waits until Book 3, which is about "How We Receive the Grace of Christ" through the Holy Spirit. Calvin insists that the opposite of the doctrine of predestination is not the idea of free will but the teaching that we are saved by our good works.
